if the insurance has paid out it belongs to them unless the owner paid for the car back out of his settlement in which case he should have the relevent paperwork, if you buy it there is nothing stopping the insurance company taking it away from you.
all the above means nothing if you are buying it from the insurance company.

20K+ Super Poster.
Could also be a simple mistake on the part of the database ops, try and trace the insurers, then ask them for a "NO INTEREST IN TITLE" document, this means they cannot take it from you, or anyone, the car may also already have this document, the cat d mondeo I bought I insisted on this prior to buying the car/salvage.

like a lot of things administration can go wrong and i'd be surprised no amazed if the car has been paid out on a theft claim and is driving around happy as larry and no fucker from the old bill is looking for it.
If you contact the police they will check the issue with the car for you as its possibly going to be of interest to them.
somthing smells funny with this though, insurance companys just don't pay out and accept the cars out there driving around when they have huge teams of investigators trying to find stuff.

Check the reg on the DVLA vehicle enquiry form on their website to see when it was last taxed as surely if the car has been taxed recently then surely it must be a mistake as you would have thought the insurer wouldn't have covered it unless they know something else

Have you HPI'D on reg number alone?
Maybe the reg is not original and it's that that's causing the problem.
Or is it running around on Traders insurance and or trade plates and not been alerted to the original Ins co.

hi fella,im a insurance aproved repairier..and.. ive come across this several times. its wen the insurance company pay out (the car becomes their property if its not a third party claim) but the owner wont hand the car over to them, usually wen theres a dissagreement on the pay out value. and the owner wants more.... the police wont be interested. i am also now finding that if a cars been prevoiusly recorded as a "cat C" some insurance companies will only pay the third party in a accident and not yourself.(tescos defiately)...so effectivly this makes cat C cars worthless ! HPI isnt a cert, a lot of cars slip past it, bottom line is...if its to good to be true......it normally is ! good luck !

Hi i understand wot ur saying but i havent bought this from the lad around the block. I have bought it from aet turbos who are a very reputible company in the tuning world and it was there own car. He holds the vic test certificate and has the recipts for everything. Theres just been a mix up from the insurance databases. And saying the car is worthless is a bit much because the only damage wot occured was a full rear quarter. Which dont sound alot but from a traders point of view the cars only worth 3000k but we all no its worth a hell of a lot more. If it was a sapphire i wouldnt of entertained ut but a 3dr then its worth it all day long cat c regardless
