Default Focus ST-2 daily driver

The mrs wants to trade her Puma Racing in for a Focus St-2 and use it for commuting to work. What are they like to live with on a daily basis?

Cheers Jason

Took one for a test drive today, felt really nice, first time I have driven one. Completely different to my cossie. Her commute is about 20 mile round trip. Also don't know how much her frp is worth

nice cars, go well to, however they are really really bad on the fuel front, even compared to my petrol 4x4

Brilliant cars, shit on fuel, i'd say an frp is about 1/3 less thirsty in the real world

I average around 26 too round the doors, on a long steady run it will do low 30s. I wouldn't say it is shit on fuel, it's kind of what you would expect from a 2.5l turbo. It's got a few goodies on it too to get it up around 300ish bhp. Love it to bits, sounds awesome and handles well, would definately recommend one!

Bloke I work with has an ST3 and used to use it for work. He averaged 17mpg to work and up to 22mpg on a run and, being chipped, it ran on V-Power. The fuel bill was that bad he now gets a lift from me in my 900cc Cinquecento and pays me half the difference between his fuel bill and mine. I get 38mpg minimum

Maybe a silly question but are the facelifts any (08 on) any better than the non facelifts on the fuel front as I know they had a few mechanical tweeks...? I fancy getting a facelift ST next year but this is what is putting me off.

A guy he knows who has done a few of them, but yes, I agree it probably could be better. Also, he does seem to think the boost gauge is a rev counter

I ran an 07 plate one for two weeks, onthe daily commute in slow traffic ( 11 miles ) it never saw saw above 20 mpg and the best i did on a long run was 28

For comparison my chipped 2.0tfsi skoda ( circa 235bhp ) does over 40 on a long run and 32 on the daily commute.

I ran one for 15 months as a daily and it was a lovely car. I didn't rate the way it handled but it was good on fuel, well put together and went well. I'd certainly consider one as a daily again, just not for fun which is what I also wanted.

Think probably the fun factor is down to the fact it is a heavier car than the RS and lack of LSD. Is a bit more refined for daily use than an RS (I mean MK1 RS btw)

I'd still love a mark 1 Focus RS and I'd run one of those for a daily. When I bought my old ST it was a toss up between the 2 and I regretted not buying the RS.

I'n going to be in that situation soon as well RS: always wanted one, RS character and style, wide arched, but is more or less the same as my 1.8, interior is the same, won't be as good for daily use as a ST.

ST: newer car, lovely interior, more subtle kind of car which I like for some reason, excellent noise, but don't know if it will drive as good as the RS and I'm going to regret it and also killer MPG which I keep hearing. Plus these seem to depreciate like an anvil RS's I think will still hold value.

I ran mine for 4 years, around 26mpg thats at the 295bhp. its a 2.5 Turbo why would you be overly worried about the fuel consumption ?

It's a great day to day car, 2008 cars are a little better 2006 cars had stronger clutches - less liner cracking problems, some 57 plates had engines that had a habit of cracking the liners even on standard cars, suspected faulty batch of engines IIRC.

People worry about fuel consumption because petrol prices are making cars that were once affordable into unaffordable ones. I was dead set on buying an st for my daily, however the rising fuel cost made it unviable. This has happened to a lot of people hence the low values at the minute!
Surely that's not hard to understand? Similar performance CAN be had with better mpg.

In all fairness any cars like the ST you don't by them with number one on the "list of must have's" is fuel economy, Yes the rise in Petrol will effect the price of the car in running costs, but again if its more important than performance then its the wrong type of car.

The ST is great to run day to day as the parts are cheap, if you drive like an old Woman you can get 30+ mpg out of them, if you drive "with progression in mind" then it will average around 20/25 ish.

I'm sure post 08 cars had some block revisions to stop the liner problems. Can't remember whether they had any other changes.

This is true - or so a lot of the tuners understand, the blocks are the same as the RS ones so they are plasma lined.

Mines is used daily, but I only drive 8 miles a day. Thats all around town with lights, hills & road works. Currently getting about 19 mpg. Mine has no performance mods at all, just different wheels & lowered.

Octavia VRS TFSI ( chipped its about 230bhp and does 32mpg if I kick its head in and 40 on a good run )

Its hardly a performance car the ST or the Octy, they just brisk family cars for the everyday man. And every day I spend on fuel so its a factor when buying

Its a factor for everyone else too, the depressed prices of the ST prove it, its not just me, look at the market. 12 months ago it was over Ł10k for a good one, now as little as Ł7k will get a very good one. My Skoda hasnt dropped anything like Ł3k this year, nor any of the other less thirsty cars with the VAG 2.0tfsi

But if you can get similar peformance for the same cash but much better economy then its certainly not going to be ignored is it?

Seen the new ST yet? 2.0 turbo

Guess what the engines called.....yes thats right ECOBOOST

because they realised that altho the old ST was/is a fantastic car its was too thirsty compared to its main rivals

I certainly would have bought one and a few peeps I speak to would have too.

Its a shame as they are fantastic IMO and just the kind of car Ford needed to make

Thanks for all the input and opinions guys, very helpful. In all honesty not really too bothered about the fuel consumption as I would look at a diesel focus instead. Just really fancy an ST, loves the looks, feel and sound of them.
