Ticking noise when starting car.. HELP
Basically my girlfriends got a 1.3 fiesta x plate and last week she went out in it, ran fine with no problems at all. came home and went to go back out in the car and it jus made a "tickin" noise n wudnt start.
so i thought it was starter motor, so i replaced that with brand new one, still did it so replaced battery which cured it, went out earlier in it and all the electrics cut out, so we stopped and turned it off, went to start it and it made the tickin noise again.. what could this be?? could a relay be on its way out or something???
any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks DaN

sounds like alternator to me as above, the battery would have been drained as you drove until it no longer had the power to run the car.
I would charge the battery up, then try it and if it starts then I would guess the alternator is caput.

As said possibly not being charged, dependant on when the battery was replaced as even with a fully charged battery it won't last long!
If you have/can get hold of a multimeter measure the power the battery has, you want to be seeing 12V+ and when running 13V+ (On these it's actually more likely 14V+) if you can't do this let me know as you can also do this by using the diagnostic mode on the dash which I believe the car would have!
Another easy test is to put the headlights on (Will require ignition) if they are bright then go dim this confirms the battery is flat!
It's more likely to be the "Smart Charge" side (Wiring to be specific) rather than the Alternator itself.

as above, i had issues recently with the smart charge, after checking the wiring on the multi plug around the alternator (three wires plugging into the alternater) these seemed to be fine (common to break), we replaced the alternator (which comes with the smart charge bit) it was tickertyboo.
I would get it tested before you go spending cash though.
