Default Whats the crack with track days

I'm building a track fiesta with a 2ltr, do cars have to meet emissions for track days?

What kinds of restrictions are there on cars on these things, do you have to be MOT'd etc?

Any help greatly appreciated

You need a licence and suitable helmet. Noise regs are tested. Some have 90decibels or thereabout others are 105. they all get scrutinered to check for safety and thats about it really

Basically unless your car looks dangerous or about to blow up anything goes.

As above quick noise check some times if not it's fly by noise checked, bring your own helmet or rent one (I wouldn't fancy though) the cars don't get checked but marshalls will flag you if you are endangering yourself and/or other drivers or you have a problem with your car you may not be aware with (black flag)

Other wise, go for it!

Anywhere fron £55 to £165 depending on time of year. Full day half day or evening etc etc

This is a good site and is independant from any companies so shows details of all different track days http://www.trackdays.co.uk/ . Dont know where you are but id recommend cadwell when you get a bit of experience. perhaps im biased as some of my mates work there and i'm only down the road but its a very demanding track as not much run off and not very wide.

Hi Dave - I was a trackday virgin until 2006 and had asked the same questions you did plus more..

The first thing is to make sure the car is upto the job. Spend an afternoon looking over it checking bolts/levels/tyres and general condition of parts. If something looks a bit suspect see how much it would cost to replace. as if you left it to chance then this might ruin your day after a few laps... I put a fresh set of brake pads in and fresh antifreeze/coolant just for my first outing. As you'll be amazed how much pads wear when your going full pelt for long periods.

Would be a good idea to take some spares. Maybe a toolkit and a jack and maybe a small amount of parts likes pads/oil/water.

The general rule is to just enjoy yourself. Don't try driving like a tart and think your somehow turned into Jenson Button overnight Just take things in your stride. If your going round and someone is generally quicker and more confident than just just put over to the right on a straight and let them past.

If your on an open pitlane day try and do 5-6 laps at a time and come into let your car cool down for 20mins. Going for longer won't help your oil temp or coolant capability... I'm not saying come in every time but give your car a breather for time to time.. I found swapping passengers and having a drink was the perfect solution

It's not a race, you don't get anything for coming 1st, remember that.

The most important thing is to enjoy your experience and catch the bug

That is all.

Actual cost of a trackday IME is around the 400-500 pound mark by the time you factor in fuel to and from the track, fuel used on the track for lots of sessions, wear and tear on expensive trackday tyres, increased vehicle maintainance, and possibly even a nights B&B if its a long way away.

And thats doing it in cars like clios and corsas and minis, will be far more in real terms in anything big and heavy like an evo etc.

Depends on where you are obviously but goodwood has allways been good for me, my last day was £125 entry, open pit,98db limit. It was a great day out BUT , i had to hire an exhaust tip muffler which was £25 plus I needed 3 new tyres -pads-and used over £80 in fuel in about 5 sessions. So in the end it cost me over £400
Realisticly I should have changed the brake fluid, engine oil straight afterwards aswell but I didn't.
It's a good crack but it's not as cheap as it first appears.

Also I should add it's worth taking a spare set of legal wheels/tyres with you otherwise if you push it quite hard you end up having to drive home illegally like I did .

ive not had any experience on those tracks so cant comment on the cost. I done quite a few at cadwell and they do evening sessions for £55 quid. quite nice in the summer when youve been at work then its cooling down and you fancy a blast. in my origional post i only meant the actual cost of the track time not the total costs involved as mentioned about fuel , tyre wear etc etc

i suppose it depends on what companies run them I suppose and how well known they are that alters the price perhaps??

cost of trackday:

- transport of car / trailer etc
- fuel
- 1 set of tires for a full day
- 1 set of brake pads per full day
- fresh brake fluid (change every 3months max, at least i do)
- usually get an oil / filter change after a heavy trackday, just for good measures
- fee for track
- food n drinks
- racegear like helmet n gloves (u can use a bike helmet if u got 1)

that covers it if everything goes according to plan, which it never ever does.

It depends what you mean about taking it halfway serious, I am fairly competitive for the sort of vehicle I drive normally on most trackdays I do and I dont spent that sort of money, most lightweight trackday cars dont require new tyres every time you do a trackday or new pads everytime etc.

In fact you could be competitive in many of the cheaper racing serious for that much per event, never mind just trackdays.

depends what car u use really, but escos and porsche usually bring bills like above.

havin said that, the porsche lasted 2 days with pads n tires in hockenheim on full blast

I got told by someone who had a 3dr cossie that he could use a full tank of fuel in under 12 minutes on the track. Sounds to me that you want a tanker to come with you.

over 50 litres tank IIRC
so a gallon a minute
Average speed on a fast circuit for a REALLY quick car is like 90mph or so, so 1.5 miles per minute

so about 1.5 miles per gallon

Are you sure it wasnt either:
A highly modified veryon he owned not a sierra?
Or a total fucking wanker you spoke to?

Did my first one at Cadwell in '99, been doing 2-3 per year ever since.

As others have said, budget £500 per time and you won't go far wrong.

Above all, FFS enjoy yourself and don't drive like a dick.

I normally do between 1/2 - 3/4 of a tank per track day.

oh and changing brake flud every 3 months? im not really sure of the logic behind this. i'm assuming youre using a decent (A), Castrol etc.) 5.1 flud... it makes no sense to me why youd change it so often?

alfred e neumann aka dumbo aka jim gallinoballsy,

u really want me to comment so i will

i own cars unlike your little gay mr2 shitbox or your family m3. now cars can be used properly on track, again unlike your short penis variants.

if ever you have the chance to drive one of those for a day, you of course wont ever do it again, as an wannabe mcp cant afford it, you would know what it costs.

ah and brake fluid, ap recommends a 3 mo interval on racecars but why i am telling you this, your too stupid for your own good.

go try to convince some bint to stop beleiving in jehovas witness, get a face op or just get lost you stupid daft cunt.

Tyres on the Gooon (dunlop dzo3's) do about 150laps of Combe as do pads (ds3000), its fuel that kills us at around 6mpg

Fluids are changed frequently, around every 200 laps, each track day costs around £450-£500 on average including track costs

so youre using dot 5.0 fluid then not 5.1?

and frankly your comments are so utterly rediculous i dont even feel it warrants a response.

do you genuinely beleive that the cars you are driving are so special that they cannot cope wth 100 hard miles without needing brake and tyre changes?

i'm guessing youve never had any professional instruction on track? or at least any you listened to

and yes ive seen you drive round a track
