Default Golf MK4 Diesels

Having a discussion with a friend last night about wanting a diesel for my next car, and how 90% of the 45 cars ive owned have been fords and vauxhalls, , oh and the 2 french shite 306s i had, one which wouldnt start unless it was on a complete flat and the other that i crashed into the back of someone in and the engine fell out of it at 20mph..

The conversation then moved onto how shit newer vauxhall/ford diesels are.

For example you have the mk3 and onwards mondeo, failing dual mass flywheels and injector issues, the same with the focus TDCis or anything TDCi, and the older focus mk1 fuel pump failing.

My mate then said why not get a golf diesel? mk4?

Ive never been a v dub fan, i did own a mk2 golf driver once for a short period of time but it was tired and riddled with niggly faults that did my tree in so i got rid of it.

Ive been trying to broaden my knowledge all afternoon on these mk4 diesels. I understand they just did a diesel model and then they did the GT, TDi model? some are 5 speed, some are 6 speed? I went to view a 130 6 speed GTTDi model but the turbo was making a funny noise when it came on boost so i left it.

I understand too there are 90 , 110, 130 and 150 bhp models? the 130 and 150 are 6 speed?

What is the best one to get for performance and economy? Ive been told the GTTDi 130 6 speed is the one to go for? also looking at getting it remapped for better economy etc.

Seen a few on ebay, older X reg etc for around £1500 - £2000, what should i expect to pay for a good one? not fussed if its a 3 or 5 door. any common faults on these?

Cracking cars, can knock suspesnion arm bushes out and the pattern ones are total crap. Snapping cams is common around 80k miles. Well built, reliable German car

if you want the most power get the PD150 as it has a FMIC and bigger turbo than the 130

there pretty bulletproof but turbo's tend to let go after 100000 especially if remapped

I had my 150 since Oct and not had any bother except it needs a new set of glow plugs

i looked for a 3dr gttdi for ages at the under2k mark.spent 3mths looking but all were high mileage ans a bit worn and unloved.they are generally abused because everyone just thinks they go forever which in fairness they do.i ended up buying a 2owner local 5 door tdise r plate with full history and90k miles.not what i wanted but had it a year now and about to change hopefully to a 130 3dr gttdi.only probs i know of are the rear plastic covered brake pipes corrode badly ,rear arm bushes and i removed all the arch liners front and rear to discover at least a bucket full of mud

On the subject of Golfs, this one doesn't look bad although it's not a diesel.

golfs have dual mass flywheels as well, gbox problems and can go through turbos, i worked at a skoda main dealer so basically the same as vw and they do have problems

good cars but dont be thinking that nothing will go wrong

the 90s and 110s im pretty sure have the older engine whereas the 130 and 150 are pd`s, they are the ones to go for

think they do from 1998 to 2001 in none pd format.a non turbo s,a 90-110-115 tdi, tdsi and tdise.and in same engine bhps a gttdi which looked the same as a basic gti.recaro or recaro type seats exterior colour coding ,computer ,aircon, alloys etc.non gts like the basic 90 tdi equals no cd, no air con, windy windows etc.the se had all the same as a gti but no alloys ,gti interior ,or colour coding.the later pd cars had the finer injection system and lots of extras as standard.just to add to the diesel vw debate.my ex girlfriend had thr 3dr polo 1.4 tdise sport.just turned 170k goes well and the mpg is epic.cracking little car

I've got a remapped 110TDI Bora (same as Golf but with a boot).

Its never ever let me down (touch wood). Currently on 225k, original engine, gearbox & turbo. I changed clutch at 165 & its on its 3rd cambelt.

Just wear and tear items have needed to be replaced - although I've changed other things through choice.

Can't recommend them enough tbh!

Think ill stick with the PD engine idea then.. 130 6 speed seems the most appealing

I had 2 diesel Golfs before my Focus. Excellent cars- well built and respond well to mapping. I had 150 TDi first then a special edition 25th Anniversary. Really nice recaro interior on these and full kit and wheels. Diagnostics easy to do on vws too. Standard suspension on GTTDi mk4 is like a boat- loads of lean in corners. But cruising down motorway they do 55+mpg, even mapped up to 200bhp/300lbft. I'd recommend one

Generally very good cars for the money; not many can compete with them in terms of MPG for their price.

The problem I found was finding a good one. I'd be tempted to buy a diesel anniversary model as prices are really starting to drop now.

Cambelt and tensioners replaced in September this year.

Its had in the last 18 months, new brakes front and rear, new rad, new exhaust amongst other things

I have receipts for this work. It has also had an oil and filter change which I did myself.
Turbo replaced as it let go, now has a turbo from a 75k car.

It has Xenons, and also a new clutch (Cost over 1k!!!!) under a year ago

Aircon works fine, and is infact freezing cold!
Thousands of £ in receipts, old MOT's etc etc
Bodywork is immaculate and a VERY shiny red.

MOT - August 6th 2011
TAX - End of July
132K

Heres mine, now the exhaust housing vanes are unclogged it goes like fuck again - torque is good, mines a 115 6 speed GT TDI but enough for my daily, they say the 130's are the best.

I love mine as it's mix of reliability with sporty looks and feel as it's got R32 brakes and anni suspension, the outside is all anni & r32 xenons - the interior is full R32 grey leather and the seats are about the best i've ever sat it
