Is this a common thing to go wrong on these. strarted the car yesterday and heard a loudish noise which seemed to be coming from behind the drivers side wheel,Popped the bonnet and seems to be coming from the alternator as far as i can make out.
Just wondering if anyone else has had problems with theirs as the car has only done 46k now.

Could well be the alt, next time it does it, switch on everything electrical to see if the noise changes as it will usually doing this.
If not I'd be pulling the belt cover and checking the idler/tensioner pulleys etc as it's not unknown for the plastic outer to break up and come off.

Tried putting everything on and no change in noise.
Do you mean the timing belt cover? as i pulled off the plastic top cover of the timing belt there was no change in the loudness of the noise

Tensioners wear and get noisey, I have a good used alternator if u think that though.

Cheers mate is it the tensioner for the aux belt that wears?

Yes the aux one.

cheers mate not gonna get a chance to look at it till next weekend now.If ti turns out to be the alternator will give you a shout.
