Default Removing slam panel?

Im seeing more and more cars with the bonnet slam panel removed and a metal (usually stainless) item bolted in its place to allow easy access. My body guy said its a no no and will lead to allsorts of problems. Whats the score??

You may find when you remove the slam panel that the tips of the front wings pull in slightly which can nob up the wing to panel gaps. When I did mine I found I had to just pull them out slighlty when I bolted the replacement section in place.

Some cars come from factory with bolt on slam panels - Peugeot 205 for example. As mentioned above just take measurements prior to fitting a bolt in one.
