158 bhp per tonne
Heres a question for you all.
What standard car will keep up with, in a straight line, a car that does 158 bhp/tonne ?
My mate has a standard ep3 civic type r (piperx viper, thats all) and it absolutely swamped my passat, which is remapped with evolution chips software. I literally couldnt keep up at any point in the rev range, the civic just pulled, all the way up to an indicated 147mph, i didnt go anywhere above 100mph (private road ofcourse).
Im hoping my run in with the police who did me for speeding and driving with undue care and attention (and let the guy in the civic off btw :S) wont go to court and so if i get off free ill be looking to upgrade my car asap.
Quite saddened i have double the torque that he has and its made no difference what so ever! His is a 55 plate do they have more than the quoted 197hp ? As i cant be far off that figure either and he had one passenger more than me!

my mate has a vw golf tdi remapped to 190bhp and absolutlyeats the civics. u sure the remap actually is activated? maybe shit set up try a map from REVO thats where hes was done from. and as to the power my rs turbo at 200bhp used to make them look stupid! so now at 320bhp they keep up because i have a bit of lag and next thing i just fock off in the distance when my car boosts hard.. maybe a renault 5 gt turbo will sort out the civic lol or a tdi remapped

I had a mk4 Golf Anni TDi before my Focus. That had 150bhp standard but had stage 1 remap and panel filter. Was mapped to just over 200bhp by Viezu and that "just about" kept up with a ctr on a straight but got left in corners. Had 302lb/ft from 2800rpm to 4800rpm on data logging. The civics though are hugely quick when driven properly by someone who knows how to drive them. My mates lass has a 250bhp proven n/a civic that matched his old Evo 8 mr fq-320 running nearer 370bhp for 0-100 acceleration on track days :O

A local tuner did a ctr turbo. Was mentioned as ~400bhp but not sure but that wheel span at 80mph planting the throttle lol
Nearly got a ctr but the older ek9 shape. But went for the focus in the end

15K+ Super Poster!!
It could also have less BHP per ton and be faster if it actually has more absolute power once over a certain speed.
Torque at the flywheel is pretty much irrelevant in an outright drag race, it's a measure of instantaneous force. What matters is torque at the road wheel, and when you're in a petrol that is revving at 8k and is still in 2nd while the the diesel is in 4th, this should give you a clue as to why the petrol car is ahead.

They're just a bloody fast car, gearing and revs is on their side they have so many usable revs compared to a turbo car, my car has 2500 rev of usable power with big amounts of lag on gear change compared to 3000 or more with no waiting
My car only wins out above 120 and I have 50bhp more and a shed load more torque!
The ones to look out for are dc5s if someone can pedal it they're nuts

Would never happen in a real world scenario. I.e. a lorry would be quicker than an f1 car to 2000rpm's in that case. But if the f1 car had a torque multiplier to make the top speed equal it would still win as it has more bhp.
It would never happen there is always a gearbox or some kind of torque multiplier.
The saying is like bob down the road saying "my nissan micra is faster than a ferrari if you push them off a cliff" (I went on to say it wouldn't as the ferrari would have a higher terminal velocity )

Its pretty simple.
The Civic type R is a renowned sporty hatchback with, a good ammount of power from a great engine, good gear ratios, and has had some thought put in by the designers to make it perform on the road.
A diseasal passat is a german APC made for the school run.

my cousin has a 310bhp/385lft (dyno proven) vxr astra and it was truly mauled by a 240bhp diesel astra down in low gears, but once it hits 4th the bhp differance comes into consideration
diesals are quicker than alot of people think.

It doesnt keep up with the civic at any rpm in any gear, torque seems useless i have nearly double what he has and it makes no odds.
We can both be doing 40 in our top gears drop the throttle his pulls away!

Had a passat tdi remapped and they do go well, mine spent most of it's time wheelspinning though!!!
I like the little civics,at the end of the day the gearing beats you cos they rev to 9k,you've made 3-4 gear changes to hit a ton,he's made 2-3 and he's on song with the VTEC meaning your just never going to beat it in a full on race.
I'd say mid range if you caught him on the hop you could keep up but otherwise just enjoy 40-50mpg in a very relaxed atmosphere while still shifting everywhere!!!

my best mate has a 535d thats mapped, and while it might not be the quickest car in the world i would class it as a quickish car for a big barge, we had a play with a few evo's on the way to TOTB and they were shocked when we spoke to them in the car park

XR2i Carl's legacy will never be forgotten will it.
Yea, they are very impressive.. and in the lighter 3er, then it'll be even quicker again. Not surprised that you gave a wee bit of a fright to those Evo boys. However, to be fair, some owners think that a *35d is genuinely are the fastest cars in the world... like R-Carl did with his dad's remapped 335d.
