Default what would be best?

My 1990 42k Xr2i is due an oil change and i have read loads of articles on here and net regarding fully synthetic oil. i would like to go fully synthetic but its a 20 yearold car, would it cause havoc with the tappets? would i be best off sticking with 10/40 magnatec.

Advice would be appreciated as its a minter car and engine is super clean so want to look after it you know. anyone have any advice to offer?

Since your car was made, engine oil has come a long way, yours is a CVH ?, or Cam Very Hungry, so I'd be suing the best oil possible, the problem is now that oil is still back in 1990!!
ZDDP, or Zinc Dithiophosphate, or rather the almost complete elimination of it from todays oils is doing much harm.
Zddp is a awsome anti scuff chemical, that was so needed on the cvh.
You can buy ZDDP additive and it is advisable in certain engines, most notably the cvh.
Fully synth will do no harm, but even this lacks a good amount of zddp, so use whatever but adding zddp will defo help, unless wears already bad ?

Yeah its the CVH but its not using any oil and is really clean. as for oils coming on your not wrong there!! hand book recommends a 5w/50 which nowadays is mainly recommended for track day motors which is why i put the question on here.

I've not heard of this ZDDP gonna have to read about it! wonder if its anyting like Activ8 (prob not) but seen this at the NEC Bike show pretty impressive stuff.

Thanks for your comments!!!

Just to clarify, ZDDP is a anti scuff additive that has been used for years, as std already in with the oil, it's just the amount has been reduced markedly over recent years.
