What sub 1k, economical runaround?

Right guys, I need a new work hack because with the mileage i'm doing my V6 Omega is absolutely crippling me.
Conditions are:
It needs to cost less than 1k to purchase (cheaper the better tbh)
Be frugal
Reliable
Not look like a bag of shit.
I've had a 106 Diesel before now, which wasn't a bad motor, and a few Mondeo TD's. Looking around the Classifieds however and i'm stuck with ideas, so anybody come up with some good suggestions?

I was going to suggest the 106 - had 1 for 3yrs with no problems at all and great on fuel.
Mk3 golf tdi's are great for munching miles and return very good mpg
