Awsome cars, but I hate the way they drive, or rather the power delivery, gutless torque wise compared with particularly 200 bhp turbo cars, where torque bhp roughly same, think the type r is around 130lbft, seriously noticeable at higher speeds the lack of torque.
Very buzzy to drive needs loads of revs, sounds the nuts, quality is excellent, as is the whole car tbh, not relaxing to drive esp long journeys for me anyway, drive one before buying, you may not like it.

Cracking fun, go well but lack torque and need to wring their necks to get them to get a shake on. Bargain car at the moment.

My mates 2004 CTR is only a smidge quicker than my chipped A4 up to about 120.

I used to get 180 miles to £40, not sure how that equates to miles per gallon and that was mixed driving, but to be honest, it never seemed to budge from that regardless of driving style.

Tough car if looked after and serviced well, and oil is checked reguarly, faults can be...
2nd and reverse gear crunching especially when cold
steering rack creaking
alloys corrode and kurb easily
paint is very thin and will suffer stone chips
Milano red ctr's fade and the paint wont come back up due to it be laqured and fading underneath.

As said, very different to a turbo power delivery and you need to get that engine singing to ge tthe most, but that said it is made to rev and is very addictive and fun to drive as well as a good handling.

Seats are great but some suffer back ache from them, gear stick position is AWESOME you will feel like a racing driver even when sat on the drive!

Cheap now and still look good but, look out for cat d/c's, or accident damage non recorded cars, also clocked motors and bogus histories or poorly serviced cars.

Go for the best example you can rather than the newest and you should have some great fun sensibily spanking it daily safe in the knowledge it was meant to take it and will. I say sensibily as like any car, if you are a total plumb and are boucing the red line and banging the gears constantly, it will break.

What would you like to know? I owned an EP3 for 5 years also try civictyper owners .co.uk.

Oh the biggest let down was the electrically assisted steering feel, not a patch on the equivalent focus st

Try and get one with either Honda or a tuner history as they seem to prove a better car than alot out there at the moment.

Really??? Looking through what I can find they seem to be very evenly matched standard v standard

------------bhp ---- 0-60 ---- ¼mile ---- Terminal
Type R --- -197 ---- 6.56 ---- 14.96 ---- 94.5mph
ST ------- -222 ---- 6.8 - --- 15.1 - --- 94.5mph

I'm just very surprised as my chipped A4 only just loses out against my mates Type R but gets blown into the weeds by another mates ST with nothing but a Bluefin.

Is it possible your mate with the ST doesn't have half the kit on it he claims? Not saying it's the case but there's a lot of bullshitters out there that claim all sorts of mods.

My a3 turbo mapped, still use to get mullered by my mates type-r, i then changed to a type-r and i could easily pass my mates standard ST

i think alot of the time with the CTR its down to the driver ive seen some seriously slow CTR's at times

LOL as excuses go thats terrible, I should think the ST is heavier than the Type R anyway, but a little sub making that much difference, I think not. But back to OP question there a good car I think (EP3) not the newer model! Awesome engines make a change from the usual FI, my mate has an Integra Type R and thats pretty good!

Another mate has one of these, cracking fun and VTEC seems to be a bit harsher than the Civic. Might just be me though

He must be a plum behind the wheel then

Is the ST torque limited in 1st/2nd like the RS? Suppose that might slow it down off the line if it is, but once moving, I would think a modified ST (which with a dreamscience and big cooler should be, what, 260bhp or something?) would smash the Civics face in.

I don't think the Type R feels quick at all to be honest, and it is a bit gutless low down. I suppose the flip side is that it might be a bit cheaper to run than its turbocharged rivals. I'd much sooner have something with low down torque than have to use loads of revs. Nice when you're just out for a hoon about, but would soon grow tiresome for me in the real world.

I think the older Type R models are considerably cooler, and a lot more raw, though obviously getting on a bit now.

Think I'd sooner have an ST220 than a Type R. Could get a corker for £6k I should think, and have plenty of change to help with the fuel bills

problem with st spins like fck when boost come's on think he needs griper tyres, think he's looking at 270ish with all goodies on so yes it should kill it , but from what i seen it never, unless the type r kid is not leting on, there a bit of egging on between them 2 lol

im considering a civic as the focus st is out of my price range and too heavy on fuel.

Good advice, I loved mine only reason I kept it so long, even used to nose a standard Mk 1 RS focus until it came to stopping, the RS had superior brakes without a doubt . The big fat ST focus struggled in standard form but modified had me easy.
For a reliable bang for buck motor and the best gearbox and N/a engine in its class get the CTR EP3. Like some have said they do need to be kept on the boil to perform, the i-vtec in the EP3 was more flexible than the previous gen vtec which was nothing then bang. At least the EP3 had something between 3k and the step up at around 5.8k revs before nearly hitting 9k revs. I used to own bikes so it appealed to me, I do agree though a turbo'd car is better for everyday performance fun.
I would also go for the facelifted EP3 as the first gen had awful headlights and no sound proofing.

They haven't had a failure with the actual VTEC system.

I'd agree that they're awesome little cars for the money. I hope my sister still has her 06-plate Premier EP3 when I'm looking to get another car because I'll have it in a second, soooo much fun to knock hell out of on back roads and not have to worry about stuff going wrong, or it letting you down the next morning for the commute to work. Plus, never reach licence losing speeds as I could do with bigger powered turbo'd stuff like Imprezas etc that I've had too.

I loved my DC2 Integra handling more, but as a more modern and slightly more compromised do-it-all car, the EP3 is hard to beat IMO.

Cheers,
Grant

a young lad near me has a tricked up one

turbo conversion done by tdi north with custom gearbox and diff with quickshift ect.

its only a low boost conversion with gt28 and external wastegate and screamer but the suspension is the stuff that comes with a handset

but all in all its a great package and when i drove it , it just loved to be reved the nuts out of and with the diff and suspension it went where ever i wanted it to...

its ment to be around 300bhp but felt so quick due to be so light and being on boost alittle after 2k and holding right to the limiter....

was proper fun

Insurance is fucking silly.

Got a quote today, current car £450

197hp 2003 civic worth 5k.... £1020

500hp modified supra twin turbo...£960

Ferrari F40 £1500

Why would you want a 200hp civic that does single digit mpg so the same as a supra, and pay more to insure it ? fail.

This being, 24, full ncb, TS20 3 points, garaged, low crime post code.

Oh yes the DC2 teg is the better drivers car for sure

I lost my licence for a month in the CTR, not proud of it either . What about a compromise and get the imported DC5, nice looker too.
