my car died on me a few weeks back and i haven't had time to look at it. got round to it today and it seems is misfiring, its only sparking on cylinders 2 and 3. i pulled each lead while the engine was running and there is a strong spark on 2 and 3 and nothing on 1 and 4. i have put new plugs in and the leads seem ok, would this mean adead coil? or could there be a fault causing the lack of spark on these 2?

help would be great, and also i would like to know if the coil on the RS is unique, or is it the same as any other zetec focus?

best to try all the obvious first which you've done and changing the pack, and yes the coil pack is the same on all the focus zetec's

 

would probably be the coil pack mate. (well 1/2 of it anyway!)
they work in 2 banks.. 1/2 of it fires cylinders 1 and 4 the other bank fires 2 and 3.
so the most likely thing I'd say

 

that would be pretty conclusive then.....been on ebay and they are available for around £25 for a genuine ford one (for a 2 litre zetec) can i assume the 2.0 is the same as the RS coil?

 

Try the coil, common problem. But when you say you have new plugs, have you actually removed each one to inspect since this problem started???

Yes, but what I'm asking is if you've checked the plugs since this problem has happened. Just because they're new, doesn't mean they're not damaged

 

yes i have, i swapped the plugs in 1 and 2 after fitting. as you can remove the lead and hear the spark arcing from the lead to the plug tip. when i pull the leads on 1 or 4 when running it makes no difference

i just don't want to get bummed for £150 for a coil from ford as its 'RS unique' so if the part number is the same on the zetec coil then ebay it is.
