R5 GTT's

Piece of cake to work on - only corrosion on parts will slow you down
Rot in a few places ( like around the windscreen )
Looms will be at end of life , as will most parts , but alot are readily available.
Decent cars are few and far between now as well.

Doddle to work on, beware they love to rot under the bodykit! Most have had about 20 previous bodger owners so be prepared to bin/renew a lot of parts.
I currently have a semi concours condition standard tungsten grey gtt, theres a few pics on my profile.

Brigsy car is very very good.
He is 100% on the money with having to repair others bodges. I bought a solid shell with everything else hanging off for Ł500 and spent a few quid getting all back in one piece
Now its trying to kill me with fire.

What kind of power does that engine put out?
I have always wanted a R5 GTT since i first started driving and now l am in the position to consider one as a toy to restore,
What engine swaps can be done? am l right in thinking people used to put a 1.7 Volvo engine in them
Mike

just do all the little tricks that can be done to keep them cool
ali rad
oil cooler kit
low temp fan switch
low temp thermo stat
take the water feed off the inlet manifold
heat rap the manifold
good uprated fan like a kenlow
decent cooler
also make sure the belt for the water pump is in good condition
and always carry a spair

i dont really know any1 that uses companies to tune 5s any more.
they are so simple and so much knowledge on rtoc.org most people do their own.
just get 1 and have a play, they are so cheap and simple youll struggle to go wrong.

I was looking at these again last year for a cheap bit of pocket rocket fun, my old phase 1 was a scream , i spent a fortune at prima racing but it surprised so many people round goodwood on track days , it was money well spent .
I have been put off a little as I'm not sure if parts are going to be as easy to come by as some other makes, and having to pay SPECIALIST's price tags for what is now very old tech and not allways great quality kinda sticks in my throat a little.
There used to be a company called trans4mations down the road from me and they were a right bunch of robbing bastards, they claimed to have built the fastest road legal 5 in the country which i think they called the Turbonator , what an absolute piece of shit that was!!
Are prima racing still running ?

Ian Nixon is reportly very good at setting them up.
So are various northerners who as skilled with micro drill bits and AFR gauges.
Big power on a c1j is quite expensive , and hard to extract.
The 1.4 puts out 115bhp in phase one ( non water cooled turbo as standard ) format and 120 bhp in phase 2 / raider flavour.
Common mods are larger turbo , double capacity or proper front mount intercooler.
A non OEM rad is not needed.

This one looks nice!
Rare in Electric blue aswell, looks like its a phase 1.5 with the AEI on the engine side of the firewall.
Lob a set of OZ superleggra wheels on it and thatsall i would do.
As said, stick with OEM Renault Rads and water pump, aslong as the are ok it will not overheat.
There was a few tuners years ago when i had mine
Europarts(Did the reddy orange twin engine one)
BB tuning
GT Tuning (They were caught out on RTOC selling the Ł35 GSF head gasket for Ł200+
Ktec racing

Love these little cars. I tried to get one for the mrs a few years ago but after looking at a few we gave up.
I'd love a mint pearl White one, I always wanted one when I was first driving but it never happened.
I must be one of very few that actually love the interior too, the dashboard and instrument cluster is classic! Proper 80's turbo feel about it, superb!

My mate had an F reg about 20 years ago. As far as i can remember it was totally standard but was still a quick, fun car, we used to have a great laugh in it.
