Default Tyres Recommendations for ST170

Right, took the time to do a check over of my car and it looks like I need 4 x new tyres for the ST170.

At the moment, all of them are Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 215/45 R17 Y (91) and I have found them good, I can't afford to buy the same set again otherwise it will cost me £500 inc VAT and fitting to replace all of them.

So what is the next best tyre for about £80 to £90?

Thanks all.

dont know about the focus but on my mondeo i had asymetric f1s on and like you cant afford them again really so went for some falken 912s, tbh i dnt go everywhere at 100 mph and they fell quite good, plus i got a full set of ebay for 270 quid, time will tell how they last

So far, I have narrowed it down to

* Falken FK-452
* Toyo Proxes T1-R <<< I am more leaning toward this so far.

Anyone use Toyo?

Personally I don't like T1-Rs, in particular in the wet.

Falken 452s, whilst not probably my first choice if I was going to do track days etc. I had on my old 200bhp/300lbft Mk4 Golf and I found them great. Certainly for road use, spirited driving etc. I never had a problem, they wore well and i'd have happily replaced them when they wore out. As it was, I sold the car before that happened

Since posting this, I've found that the T1-R is poor in wet, so that's one off the list.

I'm not planning to do any track days, so I would suspect the 452 would be good enough for road use.

Cheers for the reply

i found fk452's to be very good on my mk1 focus 2l zetec but if you can find hankook ventus v12 evo or s1 evo then get them...awsome tyres.

i'm currently running the s1 evo as i couldn't find the v12's in my size and they are excellent, better than the falkens. never let me down at all wet or dry even when booting it around.

when the v12's were tested on a scooby at sepang they were only 2 sec a lap slower than dedicated slicks and wet track tyres and after 300 miles they were still legal where as the test car had killed 2 sets of slicks. tempted to use the v12's in a lower profile as an all round cheaper track day tyre as r888, etc are well over twice the price!!

absolute bollocks...there is no way in hell a full tread road tyre is only 2 seconds off a full slick at sepang...if you believe that you will believe anything.

Been researching around, seems Falken FK-452 is a good tyres to go.

Found a local tyre center that can do it for 77.64 per corner inc vat and fitted, coming in total of £310.56, which is a great price!

I had a set of toyos on my old car and found them to wear fast aswell. I now have a focus MP3 with 215/45 r17 yokohama paradas they are great in the dry and not to bad in the wet and the price ant to bad for what you get.

I used 452's on my old st170, thought they were fantastic!

Have got uniroyal rainsport's on my st now, they have lasted 8k and have probably another 4-5k life left in them, whereas I shagged a set of michelin pilot sport's in 6000 miles! So I would recommend these if you are after a hard wearing tyre.

I run the Proxes T1-R on my A4 and have been known to give it a fair bit of man foot, dry weather they are superb and wet weather I would say average. Only get about 14months from a set on the front of the car though.

this is because you are a animal

Falkens get my vote, I found the Proxies a bit moody in the wet tbh

didn't roll it on silverstone roundabout mate no, rolled it on the way to silverstone for ford fair 08. back end stepped out on a slight bend (had 2 roads joining at the apex), it had been dry for weeks and was slighly damp so was a bit greasy. the copper said it as an accident black spot aswell and that most people do about 70 round there. i was doing 60 as i'd spent 2 weeks prepping the car and didn't want to destroy it but hey ho these things happen. i was just unlucky it rolled as i snaked down the road and onto the grass (just missing a sign post by mm's) and it decided to roll just before hitting the hedge, was going so slow by then it didn't even make a complete roll.

never mind, was a good excuse to upgrade to the focus i've now had for 2 years 8) and yes i'm with fordtorque.

oh and last year i only managed 1 track day due to final year of uni but did a few the previous year.

anyway how are you mark? i remember meeting up with you once when you had your rs2000.

there you go mate.

only been to curborough so far as its cheap and one car out at a time so brilliant for an introduction to track driving before i go out with loads of other cars.

also when i did go i was a studet so had fuck all money and now i've finished uni i have no job and no income so hopefully 2011 will be a good year for me...as soon as i find a job that is.

plan with the focus though is to go forced induction and turn it into a dedicated track car and tow it to the track but going to keep it road legal for events and 'ring trip easter 2012.
