just got one yesterday as it goes, bloody great thing to drive, although traction control is a little keen, but given the weather quite essential lol!
nothing unusual to look for though, smokey engine would be the first, on and off boost.
bushes and bearings as usual, oh an egr valves going faulty and causing engine to stall when coming on boost as i found with one test drive.
other than that nothing out of the ordinary really for any car that i found anyhow.
looking for remap now though in next week
130bhp is alright and pulls well, but i need more and finding a good 150 bhp model was impossible.
that said i got 48mpg and driving between 80 and 120mph bringing it back home.

I changed by clutch, DMF and CS oil seal on my golf yesterday, and parts alone were Ł500 at a reduced cost: if it has a rattle on shut-down, or, and you may not get chance to hear this, a clunking/rattle on a cold (cold) start dip the clutch and keep it down - if the noise goes the DMF is probably worn/wearing out. It might only be a niggle, but its a potentially costly one.
Cam/followers - these can wear (long story short) if given the wrong oil/infrequent changes (my previous PD golf 150 had 3 cams incl the original by 110k - all before i owned it though) the whole top end might need a very costly rebuild at Ł1k +, so listen carefully for a 'ticking'/noisy top end. Ideally look/listen at a few tdi's before buying one so get used to the sound of a 'quiet one'.
Turbo's - 150's/130's run higher boost obviously, and a noisy/smokey turbo/car ... its all normal stuff to be honest!

Nice motors, had the 110 passat but chipped and boy was it quick!!!Had been really abused as well but it never let me down and still gave 40-50mpg no matter how you drove it.
Again,as pointed out above regular servicing a must. apparently theres a certain type of antifreeze that should only be used in them, think its called g12?and apparently the proper pd engine oil keeps them going for years.
