Default Kit Car engine choices

My dad brought an mk indy earlier this year and it currently has a 2ltr pinto on bike carbs, We are just about to start stripping it right down and rebiuld it as a full on track car but are unsure on what engine to use in it?
Duratec
zetec
yb
pinto
turbo'd
carb'd
throttle bodies?

Let me know what you think???

I'd go zetec personally, with a decent plenum avoiding tb's, and after market management.

I know this is a Ford forum and all, but another cheap fast option is an XE from a Vauxhall! On some carbs or T/B's for extra poke. Im not a vauxhall man but it is a good engine!

Iv always fancied a kit car with a VTEC motor. something like a 1.6 or 1.8 VTI motor would be a flying maching. I had and 1.8VTI a while back and it was bullet proof. 1.5 years and 40k miles of bouncing off the rev limiter everyday and it never faultered.

TBH we have the oppurtunity to buy a cheapish yb and we were gonna have it set up on NMS Gunship but we are shying away from that as it may be too lairy! I remember seeing a flip purple coloured one at ford fair a few years back and it was all over the place just trying to go up the 0-60!

The ford/vauxhall marriage is not one that will be used on this project, however keep your eyes open for a rwd cav gsi with a cossie lump in it in as one of our future projects.

1.6 Zetec-SE.

Can see 180bhp plus, even 200bhp with forged internals. Cheap to buy and also a light engine.

Check out: www.shawspeed.com for more details (By the way, I dont work for them, thats who I used for mine and its running 166bhp on ITBs and mid range cams)

If it will fit, id go 2.0 duratec tuned and on bodies.

nice and light, modern, yet good power potential

I also rate the idea of a duratec on twin webbers.

another one for s2000 here, great power, mega reliable, huge ports for future tuning and there are bellhousings to mate to ford type 9 style gearboxes.
second choice would be a st170 with a proper ecu for vvt like s60/omex 710 mapped correctly with throttle bodies.
third choice duratec on tb's.
suppose it depends on what your want to spend mate.

Not really looking at a bike engine and would like to keep it ford as the rest of the bits are all ford.

20v 4age engine. 1.6l 170bhp standard, come with throttle bodies, 8,200rpm limit, 5 valves per cylinder, VVT, can get RWD exhaust manifolds from AE86's.

Popular engine with kit cars.

1.6 rs turbo lump could be different...

keep it 1.6 so its a bit more revy (spelling) and the torque wouldent overwelm the chassis like a YB....

saw a nice duratec engine (somewhere on the net) 308 bhp. that would make a weapon.

F20C from an S2000. You can also supercharge it for more power. I'm running 350bhp from a Rotrex SC on my S2000 at the minute. Peach of an engine but quite expensive second hand.

S2000 would be a nice conversion but the engines are very costly!

A nice st170 engine would be good, but a zetdc on carbs would be a nice cheap conversion.

Depends what you want from the car and your budget ultimately.

My dream kit car engine is a Zetec-SE with something like a GT3071R, revving to 9K with 1bar all the way

Why go for something as big as a gt3071r if all you want is 1 bar at 9k revs on a 1600cc Zetec SE engine?

i have to say i haven't done the maths, so perhaps e.g.a 2860RS would suffice, the principal simply being to maintain 1 bar to the redline and have a nice fat power band.

N/A RX7 engine converted from turbo running twin carb. Will give a9k rpm, 230bhp and you can pick the engine up on your own its that light. Incredibly smooth and easy to install as it can be mated to your existing box.

I can put you in touch with a company who do this for a living, they put one in their escort mk2 rally car and it blitz'z everything in sight, and its classed as a 1300.

badly set up or poor driving I reckon to be honest. I have 470bhp Yb in my Westy and its not 'all over the place' at all.

I'd go for duratec or Honda s2000 lump or Vaux XE

Cossie power is alot of weight and if you go big power you start to have heat management issues. So unless you want over 300bhp then stay atmo for simplicity/weight/cost

Cheers for that porkie your west does look a weapon.
We have a reasonable budget not tens of thousands tbh if it were soley my decision it would have a duratec on webbers, or a decent cossie conversion. Lee have you any pics of yours installed intercooler positioning etc...

In my experience bike engines, especially turbo bike engines are no use as the power deliverly is too high and very on off with little torque. i would be tempted with the likes of an alloy unit like the v-tech or duratec IMO, on throttle bodies and aftermarket management for sure. it kinda ruins the drivability and handling charecteristics of a kit car by putting a heavy engine/ big power turbo engine in IMO.
