Probably the fastest feeling car I've ever driven. Was a flying machine.
I too occasionally look around to see if there are any for sale. Would love another.
Mk1 all the way
Great wee cars

A mate of of mine had a uno turbo was a rapid little car,
Talking about punto gt turbo's there was one in our village that i past on the way to work for two weeks that was just parked up on the side of the road just before it joins the a1, which i thought was strange to say the least so one day after work i went to see it and had a good look round it couldn't see any damage but still thought it was odd so called the police and reported it to find out in the end that it had been stolen ! so some lucky chap got his car back, never heard anything after that would of liked to know who's car it was.

A friend of mine had a Turbo IE many years ago, don't know what mk it was, but he spent ages finding one with the digital dash, then after a week of owning it decided he hated the digital dash!
He too played around with the boost and blew the engine.

I once had a turbo charged Fiat Cinquecento, it got part exchanged to a Lotus dealer I knew quite well and they offered it to me before it went to auction.
It had been built by Van Aken as their demo car, no idea why they'd chose such a crap car to turbo charge but it was quite fun, complete with a garret T1, afm, uprated suspension, mini-lites etc.
For a 1.1 it was quite quick (it could just about keep up with my Integra Type R up to about 50 mph) but was nowhere near as quick as an uno turbo (and probably heavier).
The best bit was the daft stickers up the side, Van Halen rule!

Worse turbo cars in ther world imo, engine designs are from the middle ages, rust like nothing else and handle shocking, interiors are cheap and tacky, and suffer with electrical issues, theyre rare for a reason

They were rare 15yrs ago, mainly due to being cheap to run/insurance they ended up in the wrong hands.

Gearboxes however?I was the only one that didn't blow mine!!!
I loved the interior, especially the clocks, oil temp, oil pressure, boost, water temp a million LEDs down the middle telling you all the things wrong with it,cheesy red carpets, mine was poverty,no sunroof or leccy windows but when I saw the windows in operation winding them up seemed a good idea!!
Rust wise,IMHO not nearly as bad as a mk3/4 escort, mini, metro anything like that but certainly not the best!!!
It's weird how they disappeared overnight really,in Swansea around 1995 there were about 6-7 regular ones,my black one on a c plate,a mint f reg one from Bridgend that got in a few magazines,a lime green one,few White ones, citrine yellow one,a mint grey one and a roughish blue one, they were well popular!!!
I'd say more reliable than an r5 gtt as well but mine kept me busy on the spanners!!!
You've got a good point about daily drivers, mine wasnt too reliable, seemed to let me down at the worst possible times as well, but it was my only car so I had to keep it going,it taught me a lot about cars tbh!!!
I'd love another but it's a heart over head moment for sure!!!
My mate reminded me of a funny story years ago last Friday with my shitbox UNO!!!
They filmed twin town in Swansea and in one of the scenes you can see a bloke doing pressups in front of a mk3 escort with tiger stripes on it.well we could see them filming and were all trying to get on film, driving about, showing off etc.
They block the road off a bit to set up so we park up and grab something to eat.get back to the UNO and it won't start, fuck!!!bonnet up,nothing obvious?try again and she goes, woo hoo!!!notice theres no lights, indicators or fans working, car runs but literally none of the electrics work, bonnet up,start trying battery connections,no joy.in the end as the filth are everywhere decide to drive home with the only form of lighting being the interior light on!!!So I never even saw the filming let alone got a cameo in it!!!
It broke down 2 days later with an ignition switch burn out!!!which I cut off a scrapper and chock blocked back in,bodging cunt that i am!

Mate that was 15 years ago... just admit it, theyre shit, the head designs are wank, they have shit injection systems, the manifold/turbo design is shit, the gearboxes are weak, compared to any other 1.3-1.4 turbo car from the 80's and 90's engine bays are cramped and tiny

Still better than a 5 turbo though with it's pushrod engine, that was a clue because you WERE pushing it,every fucking day!!
And the metro turbo, now they were shit!!!
Can't think of any others?

Can't really see why they're "shit". Seen some proper quick ones over the years.
At the end of the day, they're a bloody old car. Even ten years ago most of them were old. Like most hot hatches of that era; they were fast and fun but, by today's standards, a bit fragile and don't handle ever so well.
I think we're spoilt by modern cars and just how much quality has improved, in terms of build and performance, so often don't realise that that's how cars were back then!

Honestly were the bollocks back then, for me they were what it's all about, racing supras, bmws, mercs and fucking embarrassing them!!tuning them yourself in the garage or street in my case and just spending a day ragging it up the road to check it's boosting ok!!!
Street racing was THE thing to do then as track days were few and far between so something quick to 60-70 mph was more desireable than something that could do 140 as you didn't often get to those speeds.
They were proper David and Goliath cars, like a staff versus a big sheepdog,by the time the sheepdog gets in it's stride the staffs done the business!!!
Yes they were tight under the bonnet but look at the plastic shite that's out there now, people paying £1500 on a pump and injectors on a fucking Mondeo!!we'd have just bought another 2 UNOs for that money, stripped the bits we wanted and scrapped the rest.
I got into fords through my love for the series one turbo if I'm honest and the Cossie of course but as much as I love them now the UNO was well up there with it's closest rival the xr2 of the time, don't forget the UNO wasn't escort sized.I never even bothered racing xr2s as they weren't considered fast, same with xr3i's,only the turbo gave it a run for it's money and then a mildly tuned one, standard for standard I'd go fiat everytime.
Reliability the ford wins hands down but even back in 93 when I passed my test boys were fitting new battery trays in 4-5 year old escorts so rustwise I don't buy the fiats as being any worse.
I'd say the best cars of that era imho were the 205's and astra 16valves but for pure entertainment the UNO was a class act.
Vroommmmmmwapppppop pop bang vroomm!!!
Now,where's that fucking eBay app gone!!!NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
