Default Got My Fibre Optic Broadband Installed Today And All I Gotta Say Is...

WOW..

Its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much faster than my old net speed.. I downloaded a 700mb file in less than 5 minutes from a torrent. Not bad if you ask me .. Im with BT and they upgraded me for free - free router, modem and free installation!

And for the geeks my net speed is..

It was faster last night which I guess is because not as many people use the net at night..

But for those who are on BT just call up and say your thinking about leaving etc etc and they'll upgrade you for free too!!

i have just changed from talk talk to BT broadband, but Fibre wasn`t ready at the time for my area, but is now. I have already spoke to them, and i can get the same broadband package for the same price but on fibre. But will cost me the install of Ł25.

May change over tho, as im not far from my exchange and they have quoted me 40meg on fibre.

Distance from the exchange should not affect speed when using fibre.

Any speed limits set are based upon the price you pay !

Obviously that won't work... just if you live in an area where there's fibre!

My home town doesn't even have ADSL2+ or Cable... just bog standard ADSL and I only can manage 2.5MB so chance of seeing fibre here is close to nil!

Pings times are not soley dependant on speed.

Firewalls, routers, virus checking software, external internet usage etc.. all affect them especially when pinging outside your own local network.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does AV have to do with ICMP packets? Surely its a lower layer than what AV scans at.

Some AV programs treat them as potential hacking attempts and so hook in to monitor them adding extra time.

Also, hardware wire walls examine such ICMP packets in a similar way depending on admin setup.

Times are not hugely affected but add a few up and they do...

the only factor that will affect speed will be the distance, and quality of the copper from house to nearest box where fibre is.

slow at work at the mo, been upgraded to 100mb backbone but still capped at 10mb for the moment.

wasnt aware of virgin using any copper, thought it was literally fibre to your door?!?!

friend of mine I go shooting with does fibre installation for BT and he said eventually, once fibre backbones have been installed nationwide they will do fibre to the door..

probably be about 2030 or something stupid!

No virgin use coax copper to the door !

Cable from street box to house is usually only a few hundred metres max which is ok for much more bandwidth and is a higher quality than network/phone cables.

We (Virgin Media) have just seen over 100mb download trialling our new hubs.

200mb next year is a goal

BT's 40mb fibre option seems rather tame.. although personally I wont complain if my household achieves that speed as I am a serious distance from the local exchange.
But with the introduction of fibre they should be able to offer 100mb as a standard.
