Default fuel prices...wtf ?

When i bought my diesel car i was laughing, diesel cost the same as petrol and i got 10 or so mpg more out of the same performance.

Only now i have to do 20k miles per year more which im not insured to do (my insurance nearly doubles by putting 10k more down) to see any gain.

So im selling my passat tdi having had to live with a noisey engine, shit gear ratios for a diesel engine, etc and buying a nice 1.8t that has not only more hp but actually saves me money

I dont understand how the government wants everyone to go green, diesel cars produce less c02 than petrol ones yet they tax diesel fuel prices more than petrol prices............

I was reading a car mag other night and it done a fuel econ test between a diesel car and the same car in petrol and it worked out the petrol was the one to go for.

I have a diesel Range Rover and i can just get 28 mpg, i had a Range Rover V8 supercharged on demo for a weekend and driving as smooth as posible i got 22 mpg from the V8 petrol, i know useing the V8 in normal driving you might not get 18 mpg but it making me think about going for the petrol V8

yes they produce less c02 but unfortunatley they also release a chemical, the name of which ive forgot at the moment which is one of the most harmful chemicals in the world known to cause cancer, birth defects and damage to nature and wildlife and is only found in diesel fumes nothing else in the world produces this same chemical!!!

Crazy isn't it. The government are trying to get people into micro cars etc but offereing them free road tax etc. But wait a couple of years and they'll soon hike that straight back up!

As far as I can remember Diesel has always been dearer than Petrol at least where I am anyway.

I think the thing about emissions your thinking of is particle matter (Soot) but not sure if that explains the price difference?

Yep, today I replace my 406 1.9TD with a Focus 1.6 Petrol. I can't wait. Be nice to have some performance back, better mpg and cheaper running costs Oh and another 3000rpm

Ontop of that insurance is £300 cheaper on the Focus which is faster, better specced, worth more etc then my 1.9TD 406?

Tbh fella, when I finished my apprenticeship I was on £24k a year basic in 1999 and now I'm looking around there's plenty of employers out there offering a lot less than that, scary eh?

Passed my test in '93 and petrol was under 45p a litre, sometimes 40p if you looked around,so relatively speaking if,as you say wages have increased 60%,fuel has increased well over 200%!!!!

Also things like gas, leccy etc are way more now than before but one thing that's a lot better is mortgage rates,I remember my old girl paying 15% interest in the late eighties, early nineties, something like £700 PCM for a £65k mortgage, ouch!!!!

just so you guys know he is on about LPG not petrol or diesel

or is it propane they run over there in Canada - aint been for a years now so cant quite remember

Also, some of you diesel guys may benefit from using biofuel/veg as its cheaper and you can legally produce 2600 litres a year per person in your household tax free of course

I spend around 85 quid a month at the most

Is it cheaper to swap though?

Everything i have read about petrols being cheaper than diesels now yady yada is based around buying new, not second hand.

That 10+ extra mpg out of the passat far out weights 10p at the pump - doesn't it?

I do appreaciate what you're saying though, i had a passat tdi, golf pd 150 tdi, and due to a variety of reasons i'm even looking at a 1.8t now as i dont cover many miles these days.

One more thing though, the tax band - you might be paying £100 _+ more with the petrol.

I de badged my tdi passat, which was red, then ran it on colourcoded diesel.strangely,on the few occasions I put pump fuel in it the glowplug light would flash,I.e engine management fault!!!

Back on red,light went out!!

Much faster on red too,but it's a hell of a gamble if you've got something decent!!!
