Never been to one, but my thoughts are that they might work if you do genuinely both want to resolve differences and you get a good one, but if one of you is just going through the motions it will be a waste of time.

Best thing me and the ex ever did TBH, we knew that things were not right, we tried to sort them but with the help of the counsillor, that even though we loved each other, we could not live together... She got the house, i got to move to spain, AND we get on better now than we ever did !!!
So YES they do help.
