There are actually 4 different types of 3dr RHD Cosworth Shell.
The original type, assembled in 1986/87 alongside the road cars, which came in road spec ( sunroof hole, seam sealer , underseal etc) and motorsport spec, which did not have the roof hole, seam sealer underseal but apart from that pretty much the same shell (also known as group N spec)
then in 89/90 the jigs were re-assembled by Ford to produce a new batch of shells as they had run out of 3dr shells but were still obliged to provide parts for the model.
The 90 spec shells were different to the originals as they used some tooling from the Mk2 spec Sierra (namely the bulkhead and inner rear slam panel) thats why a fuse box from an original does not fit into a 90 spec 3dr shell.
The 90 spec also came in road spec and motorsport but this time the motorsport version was to group a spec which meant all non essential brackets like front and rear tow hooks, seat brackets, hand brake brackets etc etc were not welded on but came in a bag so that they could be added as required when the car was built up
All 90 spec shells have a 909 tag attached and it also says motorsport on the non sunroof model. and both are easy to spot as they dont have the aerial hole in the rear quarter.
To answer stretches question the way to spot a base model 3dr shell is to either look inside the footwell around where the brake servo attaches - on the cosworth version a strengthening plate is fitted inside the car, or take a look at the rear crossmember as the base shell has no holes to fit the brackets for the arb.
The shell shown in the photos appears to be a 90 spec motorport shell with some but not all of the bagged brackets retro fitted
A good way to see if a race 500 has had a reshell is look at the front end, if it has a tow hook its original spec (most early race 500s were actually race 3drs upgraded with a kit of parts when the 500 achieved homologation) if its missing its probably been reshelled into a 90 spec shell during its life.
