question for gamers and thier broadband quality
What Ping do you normaly see and wheres the server based, also what size and who with?
Im with Virgin and have been for 10 years now but just lately in the last 3-4 months my ping is always up at 150ms and im getting packet loss (lag) aswell.
I have had an engineer round last week and he sorted a few things but no real improvment.
so now im thinking of moving.

My speed is 1-1.5Mb with a ping is consistantly 150-180ms but quite often higher, it's absolutely terrible, lag city when playing Call Of Duty online, allegedly I'm stuck with it due to the distance my house is from the BT exchange and fibreoptic broadband is not in my area!

Mal im might just do that matey!
Jim-ive been on the phone 5 times in the last 4 days, tonight passed around to 4 different people then they cut me off whilst on hold, im at my witts end pal, i could fooking kill someone because of the idiots at the end of the phone who read from a script and know nothing.
I did how ever get an engineer out on friday of last week who just couldnt fis the problem and is sure of all my equipment and cable conections from the pc back to the cab.(no router conected)
but i just cant get hold of someone who knows there stuff at virgin, you try and explain ping and latency (lag) to and asian/indian/chinese/who ever that can only just read from a script, its mind destroying!!
Il try again tomorrow

I wouldn't move as virgin is the best for gaming by far, theres obviously an issue just keep on at them, my ping is usually 10-25ms but after the net lot of upgrades on the upload side should be into single figures

There's a way to make sure you get the fastest broadband f your area. There's something you need to check is enabled on yur local exchange. I'll fnd out and let you know how you can fnd out who might be able t ge the fastest service because I forgotten ATM.

I think you have to check which operators are on the llu list for yourexchange I think. it's what I can remember fromwhat my other half said.

My other half is on be broadband 20mb and it's 20mb all day every day. He games on ps3 online and very rarely has lag issues unless it's an issue at the server end with bfbc2

Depends how much you use it. Internet and web use is a big thing these days, considered moving myself because of it.

Playing COD, BF, Forza, Fifa all run fine most of the time with few disconnects or noticeable lag visually that you get with dodgy hosts but do find that sometimes people shoot me or are snapping at my heals as soon as I pass the ball. Bet I'd sweep up getting my true speed.
I used to be on VM broadband cable years ago, was awesome, always on, always fast. Would love to be on it again.

log into your router and copy n aste all the connection state here. there are guide on the internet. also look for "cable forum" its a really good virgin media broadband website with FAQs on stuff like this.
if you can work out where the roblem is yourself then you can speak much more authoritively when dealing with the call centers as oull kow when/how theyre fobbing you off!!
also keep ringing tech support and over and over, eventually youll get rhgou to swansea instead of india, the guys there seem to know a lot more!

I'm on a 2mb Line with bt and get got around 20-30fps on battlefield 2142/bf2. On Medal of honor and bad company 2 i get around 80ish but i think bc2 had problems with accurate ping detections for most as i never have lag at that ms whereas that would cause me problems on 2142 if that helps?

40.2 is acceptable apparently
*
SNR (RxMER) - DOWNSTREAM
*
64QAM**** 29 dB minimum;**32 dB or above desired
256QAM** 32 dB minimum;* 35 dB or above is desired
*
Tech support would raise their eyebrows at the minimum for 256QAM, especially on the 50 Mbps tier.* An engineer visit is not always necessary if the reported values are slightly outside the quoted range; tech support would always check for network issues before concluding that the matter needs to be resolved locally.
*
64 QAM has a density of 6 bits per symbol and has a greater tolerance for noise than 256QAM which has 8 bits per symbol.* There are variances that can be attributed to DOCSIS and EURODOCSIS plant resulting in a higher SNR requirement for EURODOCSIS with its wider channel.
*
The formal lower threshold for 64QAM/256QAM is respectively 24 dB/30 dB.* On top of that must be added at least 3 dB headroom for variations one normally finds (like due to temperature, humidity).* Ideally for 64QAM and definitely for 256QAM, additional headroom should be given for other factors like RF ingress, fridges and so on.
*
There is no relationship between SNR and downstream power levels other than the peril of amplifying noise if power is too high.

whered you copy n paste that from?
its not a case of more is better. youre on 64 so youre more tollerant to noise, but thats still 20+% over the quoted norm

on the back of your set top box are there ary attenuators? little boxes that go in-line with the signal cable? if so whats written on them? -5db? -10db? if you do a signal/status report from your set top box what stats do you get on that?
