Default anyone use a one man tow regularly?

ive never used one as i dont like them but a guy drove all the way from cambridge tonight with one to buy an audi a4 avant from me and was going to use my audi a4 avant(as it had a towbar on it) to tow his other audi a4 avant(his old car) back.

he had never used it but said he had been shown how to do it......no matter how he fitted it the car wouldnt steer properly behind him..it wouldnt seem to fit well on the lower arm anywhere due to the anti-roll bar links.

ended up me giving him much less than he wanted for his old car-so a bit of a result there.

my question is- is there certain cars these will not work on??? ie the audi?
i didnt get too involved as i didnt want to be responsible for it coming off whilst on the motorway!

anyone want to buy a p reg audi a4 avant turbo diesel with 12m mot???

Chip already covered this in a tow car thread ,its illegal to use a A frame apart from in a recovery scenario and even then its normally to the closest safest point ,rather than a huge drive to a home etc, they are not a safe form of transporting any car at all no wonder it looked dodgy, I have a purpose built twin axle low loading car trailer as the law is so strict on this type of towing ,

I've seen numerous camper vans towing Smart cars on dollies - Didn't know they were illegal!

Proper towing dollies are pretty good providing they're robust.I towed a car from Brighton to Swansea behind my scooby and it was faultless,I never really put a huge weight on it but I went back and forth to the auctions a few times which is over the Brecon beacons so uphill/down Dale and it was great.

Still, these days it's too much of a gamble to use anything other than a car trailer or recovery truck.

I've got a proper twin axle trailer with a wireless electric winch which is amazing, pulls up anything onto it that I tow behind my LPG Cherokee and fair play, the plod dont give it a second glance.I drove past the weighbridge by Ross on Wye a few weeks back and there was a pull in organised by the police for overweight vehicles.I had a Nissan 300zx twin turbo on the back and they just waved me on.

Those a frame things you put round the lower arms are hideous to use, roundabouts have a whole new meaning of fear!!!
