Cheers to a couple of people who gave me advice/assistance about what to look for and which cars NOT to buy (cheers Porkie!).
All this pisstaking, I forgot to ask if its a manual or SMG?

SMG

To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of it as when you're really moving, it can be quite a harsh change, but living and driving in London, not having a clutch pedal is a bonus!

I don't like the SMG cars, like you say, too harsh and IMO takes away some of the fun of driving. If the CSL had a manual option, I'd have had one by now. I hate this type of gearbox THAT much, that I actually enjoyed an R8 over a F430 (TIN TOP of course )!

Seriously, I know you will enjoy it, as the engine is just amazing and you'll probably only notice the scuttle shake on B-roads or track anyway, and certainly not driving down the high street with some toons banging out looking at yourself in the shop windows gangsa stylee - respec (sic)!

quick drive is one thing... on track is another

LIVING with one... very different. SMG and F1 all the way!

no question

I think the engine is worse thing about E46 M3! neeeeds turbos! or some torque from somewhere!

I had been 1000% set on manual F430... first test drive made me think it was right decision! more involving and tactile

but SOOO glad I listened to other people and got F1

Do they go full auto too? I drove a merc the other day with paddle shift, loved the idea before driving and was a good gimmick for about 20 mins of driving, then I just left it in full auto after that I even turned sport off in auto as the kick down was silly on the motorway when you were just trying to overtake.. So I guess I'm just getting old! I can't ever imagine bothering using the paddles after a while on such a car.

just because it got paddles, dont think they are all the same,, there is three different types of paddles gearboxes
the automated manual gearbox, this type will have a normal gearbox and clutch, but the computer sorts out the gearchanges and clutch
the dual clutch system, this is when the car has two clutches and two gears can be engaged and the pull of the paddle just swaps the clutches over
the automatic gearbox with manual override, this is just an auto box (normally with gay torque converts, but they are moving onto multiplat clutch types-like new jags and stuff with the ZF gearbox) normally this type will bore our type of cars/driving style

The S54 out of a E46 M3 is ripe for a turbo (like a HX40 or something of that size).

I'm jealous, I could never afford one.

Im all for manual except when you have to queue for 15 miles at an average speed of 3mph.

I wish they could invent a way to have a full manual gearbox and a mode for snail pace driving.

I think its possible, I can actually put my car into second on the flat at low speed and take my feet off all the pedals and it will drive itself, i can even brake and then let off and it wont stall! Problem is it only does this at around 20mph, not 2 mph.

These M3's are stupidly cheap now. Just waiting for the E92 to come down in price so I can build my GTS

But seriously is there any need for 4 pot AP's on the back these when all the weights at the front? Can understand the Fronts or big brakes on a porsche all round but M3....really??
