Agreed, the Focus RS is a better car across the board, but I'd still rather take the Sierra RS500 home

Both in standard road trim the focus would be a LOT quicker around a track I reckon but I would still rather own the Sierra

And what if the Focus was in WRC Spec....

Seriously, can't compare, age, FWD/RWD etc etc....

As said, Standard trim the Focus allday long, but who cares?? Sierra 500 is just a HUGE part of history and such an iconic car, i don't think the 500 Focus will EVER fill it's shoes tbh....

just curious thats all, but ok then what if they both had 500bhp and standard running gear, surely thats got to be more equal fight between the 2?

Of course it would but then you are comparing a road car to a race car!

I guess the closest modern day comparison would be comparing the current btcc focus and btcc sierra and i reckon it would be closer race on a tight and twisty track than most people would think IMO

500 horses on standard rs500 suspension/brakes would be MEGA scary, as it would in the focus but I reckon the focus would cope slightly better if you could stop it from wheel spinning

lol im just trying to find some kind of level thats fair to compare the 2 as if you look at things like this :

fully moded cosworth - been proven over 1000bhp yet the focus hasnt had the 25 years that the sierra has had to reach that yet, so obviously the highest spec focus vs highest spec sierra cosworth = cosworth wins but its unfair

standard forms - focus rs has a standard 80+ odd bhp more but from what i see not alot of potential for alot more atm with it being new, whereas the sierra does - so another unfair way of looking at it

btcc cars - the rules are different to what they were back then and you got away with alot more back then and im prety sure the btcc spec sierra rs500 would be all over the focus btcc car of today - so another unfair challenge to compare them by

only way i see its fair is to give them an even +bhp level and see how the running gear handles with it round a track, fair comparison on engine power and running gear with old technology against new surely?

I can only speak from experience in a straight line (ish). I lost one who was definitely trying on a long uphill A road. I got a wave and a smile afterwards as well. Thought it was Bonkers but it wasn't him. Oh and yes unfair cos I am running around 425 bhp at the moment as well.

But all jolly good fun

apples and oranges...............

A standard 3dr was probably quicker than a standard 500 (the proper ones )in the real world

There is no way of comparing them 'fairly', unless you compare two standard ones - But then thats intrinsically unfair as the Focus clearly has a massive technological advantage.

Basically, it's a bit of a silly comparison!

I think this is a bit of a giggle
I am stuck in the era when the RS was an RS and to me the focus isnt.Slate me all you want, the mk1 is ok when its been converted to rear wheel drive and the flint has been changed. The new one does nothing for me at all.
3 door Cosworth bonkers, lovley to look at and such an iconic car and in btcc trim . . shit a brick
I agree with pete, imo the focus will never fill the boots of a Sierra RS500.

I have a focus st running about 300bhp and a saph 4x4 running a proven 404 bhp and tbh the focus feels a lot quicker, spools up quicker.
Aboot the doors the focus would destroy the cossie, easily aswell, and its a lot more comfy to drive on a day to day basis, though when Im out giving it a bit in both and you look at the speedo the cossie is travelling way beyond what the focus would be doing at the same point,I know the cossie is modded but the so is the focus, just to a less degree, remember the cossie is 17 year old and the focus 3,technology has moved on big time,so a fair comparison would be hard to judge.
And as said above, one's a classic the other is a.....well focus

I'd be interested to see figures.

Curb weight of an RS500 with what 204bhp is 1350 kgs.

Whats an ST with only 220bhp and FWD?

Braking : The focus inspires massive confidence and can handle repeated stops from high speed effortlessly, the sierra has an ABS light on
Reliability : We'll let you know when the sierra comes back from its rebuild and we can finish the second half of the tests
Throttle response : at 3K rpm you touch the throttle of the focus and its off like a cut cat, in the sierra it lags for 5 seconds then you get a small shove as the pathetic half a bar of boost from a turbo off a lorry finally arrives.

Yeah, that would be an awesome way to annoy all the readers who idiolise the sierra rs500 and stop them buying the mag ever again

Its just not a fair comparison, the sierra was built just to homologate some parts, the focus was really well thought out as a top end road car.

I would take the Focus!!! Mainly cos something thats 20+ years old isn't going to be safe.

Crash a Sierra and 80% chance you'll die. Crash a Focus and 80% chance you'll live.

It has enough power for todays roads and can be used everyday without having to worry if your gearbox is on its last legs or the head gasket blowing up.
