The reason they "hold" their value is because dealers offer a guaranteed residual price after set amounts of time ie they guarantee to buy it back for a certain amount.

This makes the second hand prices artificially high and creates the perception of greater quality for the brand when in fact i think the quality if the interior plastics etc is piss poor for the money.
wasn't really going on dealer prices, they are always high be it ford , vw or bmw/mini. dealers try to sell peice of mind with a car which you can get yourself much cheaper. offering mudflaps, mats and a bit of tax makes them think they are being extra kind! even private sales are going for strong money because the mini has built a reputation woldwide as a great performer. i remember 1 yr old cars being sold on for a large profit by private sellers, not many mass produced cars can claim to have done the same.admittedly it was because of a waiting list because they couldn't keep up with demand, but when do you normally see a hatchback with a waiting list, its usually ferrari and aston etc.
i used to make part of the interior ( the instrument clusters ) and can say the design hampered the quality a little. innovative interior but a bit too fussy for my liking and can seem poor quality for the cash. in fact most of the interior is assembled in the town i live in
If the dealer guarantee a buyback price it will keep the second hand prices up too. You wouldn't sell it cheaper privately if a dealer would give you more would you? I wasn't on about the prices the dealer charges second hand but the fact they guarantee a buyback price...if they didn't do this then i'm pretty sure private sales would be cheaper

The dealer we went to, refused to do this, well refused to guarantee any prices. He did say on average they currently maintain a value of 60% of the original OTR price at 3 years old.... Well established BMW/Mini main dealer...

My girlfriend wants one of these having been inspired by the remake of the Italian Job. We went to our local dealership and took a couple out for a spin. I definately prefer the manual but she doesnt drive them yet so wanted the ATB (think that was what the guy called it, Auto Transmission Box) It was the Chilli model which is the middle one I think.

Handled very well and enough leg room for me. The price wasnt bad at $32,000 for a new one but the wait was ages to get one in from overseas. The convertable has just been launched here but didnt like the look of it with the hood up.

I owned an Escort Cosworth before I bought my Mini Cooper S, must say it’s a great little car, certainly goes well now it has 225bhp. The only down side is it isn't very good on fuel, even when it was standard, my Escort Cosworth was much better on fuel

A rumour going around one of the mini shows last year was that the gearbox was from a Focus, but I’m sure someone will tell me different
