Astra turbo vs mk4 golf gti
looking for a new car to take the FRS off the road, need to keep something sporty to keep me intersted and for insurance reasons
i know very little about the astra turbos 2001-2003 model. luckily one of my engineers is an ex vauxhall tech so he will come in handy, just wondering what people think of them or would you go for the golf, i think the golf may hold its value better and have better build quality but the astra has more power and seems 'more for the money'
which way would you go?

How about a gt tdi golf - 50mpg and when remapped/chipped 185bhp and 330ft/lbs! The standard gttdi 150 is only marginally slower to 60 than the petrol gti, but on a B road the oil burner is meant to be quicker.
Astras are too chavvy IMO - no offense anyone

Astra is quicker of the two and can be very capable (as has been proven on countless times at the Pod etc. But and it's a BIG but, being a Vauxhall it's about as an appealing place to be as a cheap hookers minge with a bad dose of the clap.

A mk4 golf gti is about as fun and sporty as a turd.
My advice to anyone wanting a mk4 golf gti is to buy a normal model. Save yourself the extra insurance money and purchase price as they're not worth having from a performance perspective. A reasonable car but certainly not sporty.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
if i had the money i would be going to see this one....
£2990 if haggled may get for less... and it did come with 6mts warranty when i browsing now it says "A comprehensive warranty can be transferred at cost to the buyer" what does that mean then?

I would buy the golf myself, guy I know has 3 astra gsi's just now and none of them are on the road just now. He keeps breaking them... Ive driven both cars on numerous occasions in the past and without a doubt the golf is the better drive and feels so much more sturdy and stable compared to the astra being wooly and very light at the rear. The astras definitely quicker out of the box but u can always do a couple of choice mods to your daily hack

New boy sticking his oar in...
Why not get an ST170 for that money, it'd run rings round both the Golf and Astra.
I used to have a MK4 Golf GT TDI, quick in a straight line but god the handling was dire.

Golf GTi 1.8 20vT all the way IMO...
Get a car with good history obviously. Yes they dont handle well as standard but for everyday and a cheeky remap they go quite well and at a push return you 40 Mpg.
Astra prone to turbos, or so the ones my mates had. As mentioned more liked by the chav brigade also. However Golfs fall foul of this as do most similar cars.
Done 45k in my Golf over the last two years with only routine maintenance and the odd breakage. Breather Y pipe from the rocker cover split (Prone but cheap and easy to replace) Worn passenger door regulator/mech - poor clip design on the cable/mech (Again cheap and easy to replace) thats bout it for me touch wood. Did buy a low miler with excellent history.
Said car, which may be being changed soon as fancy a change to a Mk5 GTi

Mrk4 golf/bora are shit handling cars in standard form just like a vauxhall
Seat Leon is nicer looking but its the same chassis as a mrk4 golf so shit handling and crashy ride as standard
My old 1.8 focus zetec runabout was a far better handling car than my previous Bora and current Leon LOL
Focus 2.0 zetec for pennies ??

Calibra turbo LPG?seen a few about but they are getting on a bit now!!!mk4 golf 1.8t is the boy, please don't buy the non gti they are abysmal in every way.the 1.8t is slow out of the box but a simple remap and you've got a nice tasty motor.
Glad you ignored the renault,I'm on the bog having a shut now and that looks more appealing than driving one of those!!!!!
From memory golf a/c is on the climate control, think it was a button?

If it has automatic climate control ("climatronic") there will be an "ECON" button (which switches the air con off).

If you can find a post 2001 Golf Gti turbo it should have a AUM engine with the Ko3s turbo which will a basic £250 remap will make around 210 bhp.
Normal problems are Coilpacks, Secondary Air Pump issues, PCV Valve and Dead MAFs all are simple fixes. Also as some of the cars are coming up to 11 years old plus now some of the hoses around the intake maifold are splitting and cracking causing boost leaks.
If you are looking to buy try and get a copy of VAg Com to scan the car for any errors before you buy. A lead and share ware software can be bought for £30 from Gendan
I have an earlier AGU engined one with most of the basic bolt ons with a K03 turbo and makes just about 200bhp. If you get the early engine the Ko3s is a bolt on swap and with turbo back exhaust, fmic, dv and intake hoses and a remap you should make 235+
Or if you just bought a Leon Cupra mention earlier they all come with the Ko3s as standard
