I think its ok to do because im pretty sure that they do this before you have a set of wheels re-powdercoated so as long as you highbuild prime them i think they will be fine,
cheers kyle

yes mate I am going to etch prime them first to aid adhesion, then primer.

and anyone know the correct colour of the wheels?

Busy refurbing some fiesta St alloys now.we buzz off all the damage with an 80 disc on a d/a sander, then back over the 80'd areas with a 240 disc, then 400 grit the whole wheel.red scotch any areas you couldn't get at with the sander so the whole wheel has been "keyed" and there's no shinyness left on it.provided your happy with the finish and there's no obvious rub down marks then it's quite ok to paint straight over that surface then(after you've cleaned it of course!!!).

We tend to basecoat and laquer them rather than 2k as you get a more resiliant finish,as above any silver basecoat should do the job,I used to like moondust silver but a basic silver tinter gives a better finish IMHO.

If you are going to blast them yourself you would be best buying a couple of bags of kiln dried sand as it is good for wheels becsuse it is fine and doesnt pitt them as much as normal blast grit would.
And i would mosty certainly use 2k laquer as it goes harder and is alot more hard wearing.

Sorry mate,I meant 2k paint if you want a straight colour like White, red or black.we've found it a lot better if you basecoat/ laquer them as you said.

vaughant, what colour are you doing the ST wheels, as need to do mine and would like the correct silver. Also, would this be correct

Rub down - white primer - rub - Silver - Lacquer or acrylic something?

The only thing that is worrying me is that the blasting is going to fuck up the wheels, due to excessive pitting, heat and can effect them wheel balance maybe???

Im not doing them myself.

If I blast them, I am thinking etch primer first for adhesion, than filler, leave them for a week so it can settle, rub it down with 320 grit and then 400, then spray direct gloss, or base coat and lacquer

got my cosworth lattice wheels sand blasted by a mate, no probs , i etch primed them and used high build primer, quite a bit of work rubbing them down this way though to be honest. but mine were pretty corroded in the first place so i had no choice.

good, did the heat effect the wheel balance or nothing? did he use normal sand or something finer?

Dont worry too much about blasting the wheels, as long as they are structurally sound they will be fine, but if they have already pitted badly then be careful, also if the allow is a cheap casting then weak points in the wheel will be exposed and removed. Radiant curing powdercoated wheels is the best way to retail the integrity of the alloy but the finish is not as resiliant as traditional oven cured wheels. But curing a wheel using a conventional coating oven can affect the wheels strength and other complications such as out gassing can occur, I had a customer telling me about his evo seperating the centre of the alloy from the rim after powder coating driving round outon park.

Anyway, here is a set I have just done as guidance, the wheels were pretty far gone with some bad pitting but some carefull blasting soon sorted that out.

Hope this helps mate

Hi matey.

The process I will be using is:

1) Fully degrease
2) Into the dip tank for chemically stripping & Rinse
3) Into the oven for the outgas cycle of at least 50-75F above cure temp.
4) Blast & blow off
5) Clean with denatured alchohol & blow dry with clean air
5) Burn off any lint with blow torch & blow dry with clean air
6) Shoot the Primer / base / Crystal clear lacquer
7) Cure in between coatings and cool.
