Default Escort GTI Mods

Hey! i have a 1998 Escort GTI and have been looking around for tuning advice on the 1.8 zetec, As far as i can tell there is mixed views on this basically some people saying its not even worth bothering, and some others saying that with cams, exhaust, filter, chip and a few others bits they are getting 150bhp. Also looked at 2.0 silvertop conversion from the mondeo .... whats everyones opinion on this?

thanks

a 2litre from a mondeo is by far the best value for money and pretty much all u need is the engine and the ecu. Get a engine from a very early mondeo as they dont have the pats system which u would mean changing all the ignition system etc if u got one with that system. Something like that anyway i once heard. That lump is 136bhp so now will be about 125-130 as obviously time and miles have an effect on a engines performance. Then, start tuning. Magnex cat back exhaust really really does wonders for zetec engined mk6 escorts. Then get a panel filter, not a induction kit. Again, the mk6 responds much better to panel filters than cone filters. After this your then lookin at a decat altho it'll start making the car sound crap and too loud. Other than that its manifold replacement to a 4 branch one and/or cams. Hope this helps a bit. When i used to have mk6 escorts i was a member of escort evolution website and chav forum. Some really good advice and parts for sale on there.

nice one thanks mate, is that mondeo the silvertop engine? i think they go pretty cheap, does it just drop in? this does seem like the most sensible way to go though i might have to look into advice on buying an engine on its own as i have no experience with that!

yeah its the silvertop engine. I think u have to use a couple parts like oil pump or something off your 1.8 lump. But like i say join up on escort evolution and ask in technical section on there. They love their mk6 escorts obviously as they're owners of them and so you'll get more people wanting to give u advice than on here maybe.

I have the 2litre silvertop from the mondeo in mine, it goes really well. A few things need to be kept from your old engine and some wires going to the ecu need to be changed over to run the mondeo ecu, but its easy enough. I had mine stripped and checked over and new gaskets and cam belt, you might aswell put a new clutch in while your at it.

ive done a couple of 1800 zetec turbos, one was dynoed at 214 bhp on standard internals, got all the bits good condition secondhand, ran megasquirt on them both, both came in at around a grand including all parts and ecu etc. As you mentioned cams, chips etc etc, this would come to nearly the grand mark and the results would be a car that uses more fuel on light throttle due to the lairy cams, and is not smooth or torquey to drive around town, and only makes its power at peak revs and not from 3000 upwards, other than that 2.0 would be an easy route.

I've had a couple of 2.0 MK6s. That's the route I'd go to be honest. Makes a much nicer car to drive with more torque and stuff.

I've got one at the moment that I might break, so may be selling the engine complete, which will drop straight in as all the conversion bits have been done!
