Default FRST intercooler options

I'm posting this on behalf of my bro (Matty872). Once a couple of bits are sorted on his car he will be on the hunt for a better intercooler. At the moment it has my old Escort Pace unit on there. Which was only fitted as it was lying around the garage.

Spec of the car is :-

T3 conversion
Biege injectors
K&N
Mongoose Exhaust
Chip
(fuel pump to be uprated before cooler)
Breather kit
Kent CVH34 & vernier

What are his best options? He's not bothered by hype and names he just wants something that will do the job properly

In advance

If he aint bothered about names or what it looks like for that matter! get 2 or 3 cossie intercoolers and weld em together.. fabricate some end caps and jobs a good-un.. you wont get a better I/C than that! prob be good for about 40Psi
Otherwise just buy a pro alloy or GRS both seem to be as good as each other

He likes it to look nice and the car is very clean and tidy so what it looks like will be important to him.

I think it will come down to RadTec, GRS or Pro Alloy.

Pro Alloy - it's what I've got sitting waiting to go on mine.

Only trouble with it is it will require cutting of the front bumper (increasing the size of the fan cutout basically so the intercooler slots in) - but will still look pretty nice and allow for air to flow over the top of it for the rad

Oh it also came with all the hoses needed for plumbing it in and a Spal fan to replace the standard FRST one

Cheers,

Andy

I used to run a pace C/Cooler set up on mine, On cutting, no probs.

At the time mine was only the 2nd T3 in the UK(castle perf did the first!) fitted with one..........that was according to Wayne@Pro....So its gotta be a piece of piss to fit!

Dunno if Pro do one, but the choice has to be up to your bro at the end of the day!

Far too many options!

we dont/wont do charge coolers...i have repaired waaay to many of those over the years which have cracked and leak internally due to people running high boost!

Chargecoolers suffer too much from heatsoak in the FRST engine bays.

If the header tank and water system could be kept away from the engine/turbo then I'm sure it would be more effective but seeing as that creates more problems in itself the front mount intercooler was the option I plumped for.

Having said those bad things about the chargecooler - anyone want to buy a FRST Pace chargecooler from me?

They tend to be limited to about a bar of boost though if you're lucky - different tuners will say different things though about what the maximum level of boost is you can run on a Pace chargecooler equipped FRST, some say not far off of standard boost ( ) and some say up to 21psi.

I decided that I didn't wanna risk it so changed to the Pro Alloy one.

I'm not making any digs about anyone at all before anyone translates what I've said, just stating my opinion.

Cheers,

Andy

Well lucky for him there is a hugh amount of options now.

In 2000 there was the Pace uprated or Pace Charge cooler end of.

Also i don't really think he'll be running more than a 16-17psi on the above mentioned spec.......Mine run that day in, day out.

As you say andy its now do to what you want as a customer.........BUYERS MARKET!

Having said that- pace chargecoolers are much better than the standard cooler, both on cooling and flow and they fit without any modifications.
