Sounds more like an ignition switch issue to me,can you operate leccy windows or other things that operate only with the ignition on normally? If so then your probably getting position 2 and that's ok,an old immobiliser perhaps?mk5 wiring is very basic butbas said fuseboxes are prone to failing on cars of that era.

Iirc aren't there some big fuses up by the actual battery itself?double check them and the connections itself but as said the fusebox itself fails, although normally it's certain circuits that start to fail individually.after all that it's get the haynes or a wiring diagram out and follow it from there.I've had a mk6 escort in this week for welding and it had an immobiliser that caused exactly the fault your describing, all the windows worked with key forward but no dash lights or starter coming in.

All the alarm fitters I know always splice the wires near the column so it wouldn't surprise me if the faults near there fella.

Hi fella, wish I was nearer to help, but your about 300 miles away!!!is there a mobile auto spark near you?I'm sure there's a boy on here who lives london way who fixes cars,I think he's recently sold a Cossie powered connect, could b worth giving him a shout,I bet it's something really easy.

The fuse with the key is for central locking mate.
