You can find out someone's address by their name, car thieves often browse forums. At my last place of employment, the co - owner said that we were required to give out full names to any customer that asked for it, he soon changed his mind when I e-mailed him his home address and phone number.

Nuff Said IMO

As for the forum :

1) Anyone that's banned should stay banned I reckon, sorry, but that's the way I think it shold be done.

2) General discussion is the busiest place, and as you can see, it's where a lot of "mis - posts" are put, but i think this is down to getting a quick response.

3) Newbie section is a good idea, but how often would you browse it if you weren't a newbie ??

4) As a newbie, posting in the newbie section, you would possibly have the notion that you would only get replies from other newbies ? Perhaps a Newbie Tech Area ?? Or possibly, some form of notification to say that a newbie has posted a question ?

When we look at the problems,
what exactly is the problem
1) is it webspace
2) or is it the huge loads of traffic

If it's the webspace, then maybe there's a possibility to use a database which can connect through ftp connection, that way several people can place a partial passionford database on their server.

I'm not 100% focused on web development and so on, but maybe this is possible.

the problem is not webspace, nor huge traffic. There is no technical problem mate
Thansk for the feedback tho, but you have to know that there's no possibility to connect to a database using FTP protocol. First of all, it would be a tremendous security flaw if it was possible, and secondly, cutting the database in several parts on several little servers (if it was possible, which is not the case) would bring huge latency and be 1000 times slower than our huge spec and power server.
What would happen too if one of this ppl with a "partial" PF db had a downtime ? It would bring the whole site down everytime. Dividing the servers only brings more downtimes, as each one has its own downtime, if it makes sense Anyway, this is not possible, just because of what i explained above (also, giving a portion of such an important and copyrighted database to several persons would be rather risky )
Anyway there is no bandwidth nor webspace issue, we are speaking here about the way forums are not kept tidy by users, because everyone posts things anywhere, that's nothing more than this

I disagree to be honest.....

Imagine if this dude could have PM'd 50 people at a time..
https://passionford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=97239

Why would you want to PM more than one person at a time? Excuse my shortsitedness

Now a realllllyyyyy cool feature, that i would fooking LOVE....

Would be for the forum to automatically turn any image thats too big into a smaller thumbnail so the screen isnt stretched sideways

May make fookers thing about resizing, and if not, ,we can click the thumbnail... also extra usefull if we NEED do see a big pic, for technical reasons, but dont wanna fook the screen layout....

I reckon superfrog could sort this

Yep, just like spam E-Mails mate.
As we grow, we get more and more fooking problems rear their ugly heads...

Including fookers using the PM system to distribute child porn pics
You would be amazed what goes on behind the scenes... cos forums are a nice anonymous way of getting your own private mail system arent they? Another reason im not certain that improving the pm system is teh way forward..

I dunno though, why punish great members like you lot cos of tossers abusing things....

thats a very ghood point, maybe PM's shouldnt be that private !!!!!

maybe certain allocated and trusted mods should be allowed to view pm's that the member has allowed and specified !!!

example i have nothing of interest in my pm's ( or any of my posts actually ) so i could allow certain mods to be allowed to scan then and see if there secret or not , say lewis ect for example ( not that i want the cossie killer to read my pm's yet )

what about that idea and untill thats sorted then all pm's are not private and any pm can be sread by any mod

oh and as for the sean bicknell post thats simple, everyone on here has a hero/idol person they respect and so will obviously help them out as they know em

i read all the posts done by members i know just as i feel its a comunity, i talk to brom alot on msn, recomend him to anyone i meet who wants somink done that he can do yet ive only ever met him once

same with anyone tbh, BUT i also read posts by most members ive spoken to and never met too , the sludge is a good example, he went out ofnhis way to help me so i read all his posts to atempt to help him ( shame hes smarter than me , im of no use to him )

as for the name thing

everyone knows my nickname as thats what everyone calls me

but when i joined the RSOC my nickname was used and so i had to use a name i would remember

so its my reg plate ( thats not even on my car )

think as its a comunity PF has changed, we dont all have the same interests/knowlage of the cars ect

im a big fan of escort cabrios, i seem to have bought a cossie for some reason as tbh it was the option i seemed better at the time

any techy cabrio questions i do aswer if i can, the cossie ones i dont as im not the best with them

can we have a spell check option on replys too please as i do get a slating for my bad spelling but then as i never bothered at school im not gonna be the best, dotn make me thick, just means i cant spell or type

just another idea as we all have typos and im not a computer geek so im not gonna bother taking a IT course to type on passionford

Deffo need a spell checker for Ginge, i have to read his stuff 5 times before i get it, a grammar check would be handy too

I dont find the busyness of the main room THAT bad when i can check every day, but probably 1 in 3 weeks i dont have time to use PF (or the net) for a whole week, and then usualy about 25pages have passed! And that takes a while, esp when there prob only 10 posts that have much relevance to me.

Maybe a FORD related and non ford related, plus all the rooms that are currently here.
Infact i find that theres too many rooms, i dont look in most of them even tho they might have good stuff in em as there so many and i know 99% of interesting stuff just gets put in general discussion!

I know its more work for the mods, but on the GTR forum any post thats in the wrong section gets moved, and because of that its now rare that stuff gets put in the worng place as the tech rooms etc are busier than the rest!

Its the same on SkylinesDownunder, the "performance" forum is far far busier than "general skyline discussion" and the other non skyline rooms now.

People ignoring newbies is annoying, but they way people suck up to the "famous" names just cracks me up

but they way people suck up to the "famous" names just cracks me up

theres nothing wrong with that, i totally understand it imo , when i first joined i regarded DazC as a famous name as his rebuild intested me, then i noticed others and i got a flat, had a child and DazC's car still wasnt finished and so he left the famous club ( )

oh and steve your kind of part of that club, anyone with a skyline question or a jap car question is directed to you ect

guess its just all of use have our own comunity in passionford

oh and a history of cars and parts for salke is a good idea imo then ya can get a idea if ya bought a fooked turbo that the guys just bought ect

Sorry Melv,
yes, i see your point but:

A) It would upset the easy on the eye layout we have now.
B) Isnt that exactly why we have seperate forums... classification?

Spellcheckers easy
Write your post in Microsoft word, then copy n paste it across

Seriously though,
There are reasons we dismiss certain ideas, and one of em is often the amount of overheads it could put on the forum itself and slow it down. Imagine 500people at once also using the forum processor for spellchecking and grammar correction too... it all adds up

people dont use the other forums correctly as they'd prefer to post in the busy general forum.

it will take alot of moderating time IMO to preen and sort threads into the relevant sections similar to phils idea.

id just thought a mandatory classification by the thread originator would be of opened up a few more options

this is without a doubt the best site ever , with a hooge number of great members also few complete twats so i dont really see much room for improvement

maybee a room for music requests or links etc etc and as allready said a room for non ford related car chat so the guru's of the dark side can help out with stuff or talk type r r32 r33 r34 gtr s13 s14s14a and evo's to theor hearts content
you may now dismiss all my previous comments and call me a coont . thank you

i can live with my bad spelling as i dont read what i post

what about a bitching room, let people bitch till there hearts content and then the main forum would be a happy place

also can we view the sin bin too please, sure theres a few good threads in there

think a bitching room is a good idea though , even a private bitching room ( not pm's then they can cary on till there bored )

or a sin bin in general, ya get banned ya only allowed to post in cirtain rooms/ times for a length of time

think a indefinate ban is wrong tbh as people can loose there head in the heat of the moment ( i know i have and i was not in the worng !!!!!, i still got threated to be banned )

Think we have two different issues being discussed at the moment...

1) I can agree with what Baz and Lee are saying. I often get the feeling serieus questions are being ignored because the person posting is not one of "the lucky few". Have to say that stuff happens every day and on almost every board I've ever visited so don't think of it of being a PF problem... Like Stu said "That's life", but when you're having problems I can imagine you get anoyed by this...

2) The "General Discussion" subforum is used too much when it shouldn't in my opinion. Why have a "Muppet" room when all jokes and crap are being posted elsewhere? But like many I would rather put a question in the "General" room just because I know I've got a better chance of getting a reply It would demand a lot of work from the mods to start moving the topics around and it seems not a lot of people see the overcrowded "General" room as a problem...

But still I like this forum and it's about the only forum I visit every day
Don't have a lot of troubles with the forum being down either and when it does happen it's usually fixed fast.

So thanks to Stu and Pet

What are peoples serious thoughts to splitting General Discussion into 2 forums...

1) General Car related Discussion

2) General Non car related Discussion
