Our mk5 Cortina is loosing a lot of water but there are no visible signs of any water leak, performance is still top notch, could it be the head gasket? There isnt any steam comming out the exhaust and there no water in the oil.....can any one help us?????

It could be the HG amongst other things, such as heater matrix ?
If you go to a mot place they can sniff the coolant air with thier gas anylyser, this will pick up any exhaust gasses present, then if so you'd know it was the HG.

As far as I can remember, the heater matrix isn't inside the car on a MK5 Cortina, its located in the upper engine bay over near the battery so dry carpets aren't necessarily indicative that the heater matrix isn't leaking.

Hello yes you are right about the matrix being in the engine bay but when they leak they generally leak inside the footwell on the passenger side there are no wet patches on the floor no signs of leaking at all.....any other ideas????? surely if the head gasket has gone it would affect performance and it would do it all the time not just when it felt like it
