it really depends on what your welding, the technique is learnt not told i'm afraid. i've been welding for years and i change my method depending on the material that i'm welding. it's more of a feeling and knowing your equipment

where abouts are the patches, if they can't been seen when the cars parked up i'd say have a go, just get a couple of bent panels and practice on those. setting up the machine is half the battle.
you wanna get it so that when welding theres a continuious 'humming' and not spitting. hold the tip about half an inch away (i use my left forefinger to rest on using gloves obviously) and welding down the join line in an arch like motion so from left to right.
thats about as much as i can give tho as it's down to practice mostly

The patches are on the chassis legs, about the size of a golf ball.
A patch under the the back box, about the size of a fiver and the inner rear sill.
What thickness steel do you use? The same as what you weld to?

the best tip i can give is wear a good mask and have your arms covered and good gloves unless you like sunburn or arc eye. i weld steel, stainless and alloy and its only practice that really gets you into it mate
