Default Random first car ideas?

Anyone got any good ideas for a first car? Bearing in mind im gonna be 17 so its gotta be fairly cheap (under £800?) my friend picked up a punto gt turbo, god knows what his insurance will be! I was looking at a big slow diesel like a 2.0 mondeo or passat tdi... Or not?...

Haha, I wish I could have something like that but the word 'gsi' would add an extra 0 instantly!

If you want something little, a 1.25i Fiesta isn't a bad bet if you can afford the insurance. Get a MK4 for that easily, maybe a MK5 if you looked. Decent chassis and feels reasonably nippy. Can always upgrade the engine later.

Ka is another one, great chassis also and cheap insurance. Looks a bit girly as standard, but can be toughened up with the right bits.

The other suspects are Escorts and Mondeo's and things but I would think insurance on those would be a bit higher.

Of course you could look at 106s/Saxos/Puntos etc etc etc, but this is a Ford forum, and I think the 1.25 Fez is the best of that bunch really!

just get quotes before you buy anything, at your age being quoted over 5 grand to insure a 1.1 fiesta is not uncommon. the cheapest quote i got my 17 year old apprentice was 2500 on a 1.1 pug 205, even on our traders policy at work they will not let him drive anything over a 1.4

Although this is a Ford forum, I'd recommend something like a VW Lupo or SEAT Arosa! Nippy, cheap and cheap to insure (Insurance group 1 IIRC) they handle like go karts!

Diesel Mondeo's start at group 8 for the Tddi. Unfortunately, you don't get to drive nice cars when you've just passed your test.

Yeah thanks all, I see your point. Theres a kid I seen today though, looked no older than me, had a nice passat tdi.. Must have been his dads! I think the insurance is fair nowdays though with all these idiots on the road... The only other option is the pushbike for another few years.. And I will have the 'fastford donations tin' on my bedroom side!

Get yourself something slow cheap and shite. Then start saving your pennies for something you would like to have in a few years time, or start a project and do a bit each month until its ready and you can afford to insure it.

My first car was a mk2 fiesta! £100 with 10 months tax and MOT! Then I just saved the rest of my money till I could insure something better.

my first motor at 17 was a mk1 fez 997cc, insurance fully comp was 650 quid with my mum on it as a named driver. paid 120 quid for the car and probably didn't even spend that much on petrol over the year

Dude, cars like mk1/2 fezzies aren't the sort of thing your gonna get cheap on ebay, the world and it's mate buys them when they're on there for silly money. Keep an eye in your local newspapers classified adds - that's where i got mine ! old fella owned it, gave it to his daughter who used it a while and i bought it off her, had silly fuckin mileage on it, bout 54k iirc ! (admitedly that was 12 yrs ago now)

Shame my arsehole ex-brother in law torched it for me really

Focus is a good choice, yes the smallest engine is 1.4, insurance premium can be inside your budget as well.

Defo would not have a Corsa/Saxo.

Do yourself a favour... before getting ideas of 800 for a car and 1800 for insurance go and get a quote.

You dont have enough for the insurance - let alone both.

My brother is 18... £3300 tpft on any car you can think of between 1978 to 2008 and anything from 998 to 1298cc and any value from £500 to £5000 quid.

Parked on the drive, not the worst area in the world.

Yes you can get it cheaper by sticking your nan and her dog on as named driver and yes cheaper still if you are the named driver and your nans dog is the man driver.

Best thing to do is get that years no claims behind you, it cuts insurance in half! Just get the cheapest car you can insure and keep it for a year and save for your fast ford!

I did this...brought an S2 RST and with a years no claims was £1500 to insure 3rd party F/T which i didnt think was bad for a 200bhp car at 18!

fiat cinquecento

cheap for everything tax, insurance, parts

abuse it for a couple of years and leave it smoking by the side of the road

thats what i did to my first one, the 2nd i paid £200 for with a blown head gasket fixed it then thrashed it for a year and sold it for £200

Mate they are cheap to buy and if you get a 1.0 or 1.1 popular they are cheap to insure! plus with a mk2 you could just keep it forever and progress it into an absolute beast over the years lol
