You can get k&n filter cleaning kits that come with the cleaner and the oil to re-oil it after. Wouldn't bother using anything else IMO as it can fook up the filter material.
I just used warm water and abit of washing up liquid...worked a treat
You shouldn't, washing up liquid and other harsh chemicals will knacker the fibres in the filter, so all the small bits of shit that the filter should be catching just pass straight through it into your engine. Not good!
In actual fact, my advice is to buy the cleaner and the oil separately. Buy the biggest bottle of cleaner you can buy and the smallest tin of oil. Trouble with the kits is that the oil will far outlast the tiny bottle of cleaner.
I'd use soapy water, and wouldn't re-oil personally. The oil on these aftermarket filters fcuk airflow meters (not a problem for cosworths (-s turbo escos) or Rs turbo's obviously) as it coats the element in oil/dirt.
The oil is the debris retentive agent, so by not using it, stuff can pass through the filter I would guess. K&N did design it to be oiled, so why do anything else?
I agree that the oil can damage AFM's, but only if you over-oil.
Also, those that clean theirs with anything other than the proper cleaner and tap water pressure, have you actually held it up to the light once you've let it dry to see if it still has any filtering quality left?
Not to dissagree with what you are saying Christian, but even brand new filters can be very oily and I have witnessed damaged AFM's from just plain fitment of them, which would lead me to think that if the oil is there to prevent debris from passing through, it'll be bringing debris with it so it can't be doing very well!

Yes mate, i have tfr`d them, steamed them and then put them in the sun to dry.
