Default Escort GTI tuning

To start off im well aware that its better to just drop a 2.0L in and be done with it! but its not something i really want to get into ..

What i do want to get into is making the car a bit perkier and breath better. I've been searching and reading through the forum for ages and come across conflicting info.

My original plan was to get 4-2-1 manifold, get it ceramic coated and heat wrapped, have an induction kit with cold air feed from the front grill and a sports cat back exhaust but as i've been reading people keep saying that either these mods wont produce much then some people saying it will make it worse and then others claiming that will get me 130bhp ..

im not after specific BHP figures as its completely retarded to chase numbers knowing full well im never gonna dyno it anyway i just want it to be a bit perkier any info or comments welcome! thanks.

If it isn't already (I'm not sure on GTIs) I'd get the engine up to the 130ps spec, same as the engine in the Fiesta RS1800 and a lot of mk5 escort cabriolets. I believe the main parts of this are cams and throttle body from a 2 litre, then an appropriate ECU, perhaps from one of the cars mentioned. The cams and TB should fit straight on, but won't work to their best with standard management.

Yeah, the cams and TB from a Mondeo should be fine. Its just the ECU which may be tricky. I'm no expert but as far as I am aware, they are the only differences between the 115 and the 130. Those things with a good service should return a noticeable increase. Have a search on here, I'm sure its been done.

just checked ebay aswell and the cams are about £50 and the throttle bodies about £25 so with those and remapped then going on my original plan with cold air feed, 4-2-1 and sports cat back should do the trick nicely! gonna have another search and read, be nice if someone else can confirm that this is true

Well I have just a K&N panel filter in a drilled airbox, with extra cold air feeds and a Magnex catback exhaust and it has perked mine up enough for now, though in all fairness i am looking to put a 2.0 in mine and the mods i have done will fit straight onto the 2.0 anyways, so i havent lost any money in having to buy new ones when I do swap.

Fair enough good luck with your conversion! Seems as though the throttle bodies and cams from the mondeo are the way to go!

The RS1800 kit will leave you pretty much with about 5bhp more than you have now. RS1800's are quoted as being 130PS but in reality I've not seen a stock or even a lightly modded achieve that figure, most being around the 120bhp mark.

My brothers missus GTi made 155 off the following;
Magnex exhaust system
K&N induction kit
Superchip
Piper cams
2litre throttle body

Does she still have it? must have had that a good while now

I remember meeting them at a meet 2-3 years ago, i had a go in it, certainly went alot better than my(at the time) GTi, and that was probably running less bhp than it is now

40bhp sounds like a very big gain for those mods - not disputing it, just seems a bit on the high side.

Is that dyno'd? I have absoloutly fell in love with my gti and will most likely end up trying to make it a bit quicker, also are the piper cams a big difference from the mondeo 2.0l cams? As they are about £350 difference in price haha

Was run up on 2 different sets of DD rollers at 2 different shoot outs and recorded the same figure at both (well 155 and 153). Agree though the figures do seem high for the mods.

BM08, yes she still has it. The engine is out while we do something a little different with it.
