Default cosworth oil pump drive shaft snaped

2 weeks back me and REX rebilt a saff cosworth motor and put it back in the car for a lad on here ( MARK NEEDS HELP ) we all has been good with sins it went back on the road till tonight when i got a phone call to say he had just got to his mates house and as he was driving down the road his oil light came on and the motor started to go very tappy at the same time as the light came on and as look would have it he turned the motor of strate away and called me so i got to the car turnd the key and the tapits were nocking there heads off and with a small rev the light did not go out i only ran the motor for about 5 seconds so next thing i did was take off the oil fead pipe to the turbo turned the key and NO oil came out and the motor is on the max on the dip stick so we got the car to my house and got the dizzy out to start to see wot was going on well i looked down the hole and i could see the shaft was over to the one side so after 10 min we had it out well 1/2 of it the last bit was a bastad to get out as it was right down in the oil pump but we got it out and put a new one back down the hole and reprimed the motor with a drill and all was good so put it all back togever turned the key and the motor is now running 100% again . and as said re had rebilt the motor with some new parts one of them being a new oil pump that came with a new oil pump shaft so that went in as you would . after this tonight i will only ever put ford ones in my motors i rebuild from now on . i will get a photo up in a bit of it . has any one ever had his happon to them

it was all good after about 10 secons as we primed the motor with a drill befor we started it and iv drove the car and the motor is ok thank god . its the shaft thats at fult as it just looks like a pice of hex bar that has been heat treated the ford shaft is a lot hever that the one that broke so that tells me that ford used tool steal / a lot better grade steal for theres . when mark gets payed he is going to get a oil pressure gauge as iv told him its a must on a cosworth

col I didnt think the oil pump drive was meant to come out of the dizzy hole from the top,

thought the circlip in the middle of the shaft stopped it from falling out and that you put short end = (circlip to shortest length) into the oil pump 1st then fit the oil pump on the block with the longer length going thorugh the block out to the dizzy hole.,
So that the shaft doesn't have any slack and is centralised.

I could be wrong though ??

you are right about the clip but you dont have to use it as its only there to stop it falling out if the motor is turned over on a jig with the dizzy off . i no this is right as iv seen a motor built that way by a top tuner

Hi
Sorry to jump on ur thread, but can you then put the oil pump drive shaft in through the dizzy? Do you remove the washer or move the washer down? Need to put one in my engine and don't fancy removing the sump (again) as engine is now back in the car. Any help is much appreciated.
Sorry again for jumping on ur thread

I've seen a few YB's where people have used a cut down Allen key for the drive, not the best if its a cheap low quality item...

Motormel
I had to remove the clip on mine after forgetting to fit the bar before putting the oil pump on. Put mine in from the top before fitting distributor. The difficult bit might be taking the old bar out with the clip on as it doesn't fit through the hole where the distributor goes.

Good luck
Paul

Thanks Paul
I didn't realise there was a shaft to go in so there isn't an old shaft in there. Should I remove the star washer first before putting shaft in?
