Sat Nav - Which one?
I need to get myself a Sat Nav for work, so thought I'd consult the oracle on PF as to whats best. I've got upto £120 to spend, possibly stretch to bit more, but ain't got a clue what to get. So, suggestions please.

I borrowed a TomTom from someone at work, and have to admit, it was a doddle to use. I'm afraid to admit, but I used to have a Binatone Sat Nav and it was pants.

i've got a cheap tom tom, had it about 5 years now. Has been chucked down a flight of stairs and still works perfectly! Had a garmin before that, and it would take about 5 minutes to pick up a signal, shout at you when you did a wrong turn, was a hateful load of shite.

Theres one on ebuyer thats always been a good bit of kit in the past, and they have released a newer one which i have now as my last broke under warrenty luckly within a year and they replaced with the newer one!!
Basically it comes with shit sat nav software and you can instead install tom tom onto it. Not the most moral thing to do if that bothers u but its only £50 to buy this one and you can aquire the software off the net and ur away!! Need to be a bit computer minded as it requires u to do a few things to get it to work things but isnt too hard.
Plus the latest model which i have has a light sensor on the back so adjusts the brightness, also an FM transmitter so you can put music onto the micro SD card then transmit it to ur stereo!! Also has some basic games on if u get bored lol.
This is the one im on about anyway!!

Bought a TomTom Go 520 a few years back and still got it. Never had an issue with it and the handsfree calling on it is superb. It gets fairly heavy use due to my job on 9-12 hours a day 6 days a week so the battery now only lasts about 5mins if left unplugged, but in all honesty I've always got it plugged in anyway so not an issue.

ive had a Garmin widescreen (250 model i think) that has got us round europe the last few years, BUT lately its been taking sometimes 10 minutes to pick up a signal - once found it works fine.
Ive looked into what the problem might be and it seems common, but at £45 + vat to fix it, im better off buying a newer version, and im thinking of Tom Toms as well.

Here's a good list; http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtompoi.php
My TomTom is about 4 yrs old now, and it does need a new map, as sometimes it thinks I'm in a field where a new road has been built or moved. It's not let me down with postcodes yet, few roads missing from it, and it often gets speed limits wrong, but on the whole it's fine. Need to find a "source" for an uptodate map for it tho

ive had 3 tomtoms,. 1st was good but was out of date for where i used it quickly
since then i bought 2 tomtoms, 1 was just stupid, woudl rather send you right 3 times than left and i got another better 1 which wouldnt hold charge itself and was no better at findling places either
i was given a new tomtom at my new job but still use my own satnav

You don't even need to do that - just type into Google what you want and it's all out there for free. I have all the latest speed camera locations (fixed, variable, and mobile hotspots), along with usefull ones like all the Total and Shell station locations (work fuel cards are only for Total and shell), and all the Tesco locations (for when I'm out and about and need a supermarket), but you can get POI's for free from nearly all the major companies - Tesco, Shell, Total, BP, Asda, loads of companies!
