Red face mondeo temp gauge

Hello all,ive a 01 mondeo 1,8 duratec when i start it, it heats up as normal and the gauge go's to just below half way and stays there as long as im parked but after ive been driving for a while it completely drops back to the start again(as if it was just started) and stays that way as long as im motoring,as soon as i stop it returns to normal again, has anyone any idea what is causing this and should i sort it out straight away? Id appreciate any help Thanks

ya id say your right, rang ford dealer this mornin and was told its a common fault on duratecs 160 euro for the stat cause you need to replace the housing aswell,oh well the joys of motoring,
Im assuming this would cause heavy petrol consumption?

Is it a mk3 mondeo? If so yes, they have some sort of electronic thermostat, common to fail on them. Sometimes they stick shut and it will overheat, so best to get it sorted asap!
