Default i need a proper phone professional type to redo the phone lines

after about 90 minutes of prodding and poking and stripping and plugging in and out and testing and retesting and resetting and running about with plugs and sockets all over the house yesterday, i've come to the conclusion that the phone wiring is fucked in the house and need to figure out how much it's going to cost for someone who knows what they are doing to come round and run new cables and points about the gaff

main feed comes in

then it's spliced into the alarm, the sky hd box downstairs, the downstairs phone socket and the upstairs phone socket

it's at this point it all goes horribly wrong

the hd box shows the cable being connected, but if you put the phone on, there is no dialing tone

the box upstairs shows the phone line connected, but if you plug the phone into the same socket, again, no dialing tone

the computer works, the internet works, but the phone only works downstairs on that one socket

and all the colours for the wires in the house, dont' match up with the wires that are supposed to be in the cables

or, for that matter, if we wire the socket up the same way as the original is wired up, it stops working, but if you twist the wires together again from where we cut them it DOES work

so, who does phone stuff?
how much will it cost for bt to come out and rewire the place?

There are only 2 wires !!!!

The incomer may not always use the typical blue/white...just depends really, as there may be 2-3 houses wired using the same multicore, albeit on different coloured pairs.

But they will always be in terminals 2/5

Just repeat throughout the house. Colours are irrelevant, but nice to keep them proper.

Do you have ADSL filters installed as required ? and is polarity right 2/5 throughout ?

I think if polarity is wrong, it just wont ring or something.

Don't you need 3 wires for it to ring?

Nope.

Ive wired a few houses from the master. 2 wires only, and never had a problem.

Ive no idea what the 3rd wire is used for.

you use the third wire if there's no capacitor in the phone socket that you're fitting. it's known as the bell wire.

if nothing else works, i'm just going to wind up the wire and move the socket to further down the line and make it look tidier

but i'll try the 2 wire thing first
