I keep looking at loads of pics of supercars and whatnot in Dubai.
But I keep wondering...when the oil runs out so will the money, other than oil Dubai doesnt have any industry does it ?
In which case, what is going to happen ?
We have seen what Arabs in iraq, syria etc are capable of in a poverty stricken environment, ransom, kidnaps etc.
Is Dubai going to be one of the shitholes of the world in a few years when the cashflow runs out?
Theres is apparently a seedy underbelly in UAE, lots of slave workers for the construction programs. There also appears to be lots of tall buildings that have been abandoned.
I really do worry for them!

Just to clarify, Dubai has no oil. All the oil is controlled by the other Emirate, Abu Dhabi. Dubai has always based its economy on Finance and Tourism, and it's been largely successful. The massive growth it has done over the last 15 years has helped them, but its also been their downside as they never knew when to stop and the debts carried on climbing to the point at which we all know what happened to Dubai World and Nakheel (skint, basically).
What I will say though, it will never last as it is. The laws are too biased towards the locals and its still in essence a closed society. Having lived their on and off over the last 20 years and my folks still being there, I haven't seen the big changes in community that you would expect with a rapidly expanding society. Until the locals attitude changes, nothing will really get better for everyone.
Look at all the crap going on at the moment with regards to harsh laws and Brits being jailed and deported. Now, I'm all for respecting laws, but that is just backward ignorant behaviour, and in my opinion some of it is down to their culture and religion.
Cheers
Matt
