My mum has a 2000 75 2.0CDT, same engine as the TD4 Freelanders. had a problem with where it would turn over. had a look, and the starter was coming out but not spinning. disconnected the battery, whipped the motor off, as there was a choice. got new one ordered and fitted.
battery was disconnected for maybe 3 days in between. car now turns over lovely, nice and fast.. fuel pump in the bay is priming up. But it just won't fire.
had a look on some of the forums, and they are all saying about duff batterys and cam/crank sensors giving faults. battery is 6 weeks old, dunno about sensors yet.
anyone got any ideas? these got a proper immobiliser or the stupid keycode one like the 600 series cars?
cheers
Dave

There's a couple of things you could check for (not specific to rovers but apply to nearly every modern diesel engine).
If you have access to a scanner, check for RPM signal as if this is not present, it won't fire the injectors or switch on the fuel pump during cranking.
If it has the function on the scanner, go into the reading for the fuel pressure. Check this with the engine cranking. A lot of diesels won't switch on the injectors until the pressure is above approximately 300 bar (
) of pressure! If the pressure is low or non existant, could indicate the lift pump isn't working as it should or the high pressure mechanical pump is worn.
