Ok this has probably been done to death, and there is loads of info on Google etc, but still nice to hear first hand from people who've done them before.

Thinking of doing my first ever track day, done bits of karting before and like to think I can handle a car, but what am I letting myself in for?

It'll be in the Megane by the way, around 250bhp, so nothing too mental.

Will I be shitting myself and finding myself driving constantly off line to let people through?

I want to do Oulton Park by the way.

Any advice on what to expect would be much appreciated

 

just make sure you are aware of your surroundings at all times. You should be ok, just watch out for all those Lotus Se7en style cars as they will catch you very quicky.

 

Just go and enjoy it and dont drive outside of your ability.

 

dont try and go flat out striaght away.. work out where you are
and get faster throughout the day.

you will be fine matey, weve done a few now, as said ours is a mildly tuned 1.4 so a lot slower than your megane, just keep an eye on the mirror and let anyone quicker past as soon as you feel its safe.
oultons a good circuit, we are only just down the road ourselves. if its wet just take it easy through druids as it gets VERY greasy.

 

I highly recommend Oulton Park, i did my first ever track day there last year and like yourself had my worries before hand but it was a great day out...

I did it in an Escort GTi, so not a fast car and i was worried about holding people up etc but it wasn't a problem and i rarely had to move over for stuff tbh, just keep an eye on your mirrors and move over when you can see a quicker car coming through. I did a Novice day but most of the people there where clearly not novices haha but i felt it was going to put me a bit more at ease booking that day being my first time on track....

As the others have said just enjoy yourself, i was taking it steady at first and as the day went on i could clearly see i was getting quicker. I always thought was it worth doing a track day in what isnt a quick car but it really was worth it and i was keeping up with things far quicker, not that i was that interested in that, it's just nice to drive your car fast in safe environment.

I say book it and just go and drive your car to your limits and Oulton is a fantastic circuit....

 

you will get hooked on it though.

 

take your time and learn the track for a the first few laps...
don't think you can drive like lewis or jenson ...
check all your car over ... then do it again just incase..
new brake pads and a spare set just incase...
air pump for tyres....
nothing else in your boot except anything you really need ...
enjoy the day ... don't get the red mist .. it never helps ...

 

Yeah, I'm hoping not to get hooked and bankrupt me!

What about tyre wear? Am I likely to kill a pair of front tyres? Obviously will try to drive as smooth as possible, but knowing my luck, will end up with 4 bald tyres and have to drive home on the bastards.
