vw golf gear problem.

hi everyone,
i have got a vw golf 1.4 s, y reg ,
the problem i have is going into first gear.you have to put it in 2nd then 1st to get it to go in gear,
any ideas what it could be?
any info appreciated.

Have a look under the gear gaiter. The plastic 'ball' that the gearstick fits into can break and make changing gears difficult.
