Default "Windows Live Communications Platform" error?

Last few days, I've been getting this error within a few seconds of logging into MSN Messenger....

I had made no changes to my PC, it just started. So, WTF is wrong?

I've read a few things that I found on Google that talk about installing further software to get rid of it, but I just want it back to how it was?

Oddly, MSN continues to run once the error has appeared and you can do everything as normal, you just have to move the error window out of the way, it's not until you click an action in that box that it closes MSN down.

Hockney - I ran CCleaner this morning to no avail, but will try something else later. I don't run any scanning software other than CCleaner, so not really sure what to use. I used to run AVG, but don't bother any more.

download : Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

update it, immunize system, then run it

download microsofts own AV: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

install, update

then uninstall MSN entirely, including all the LIVE drama....

reboot

reinstall just live messenger.

hope this helps m8

CCleaner is not a virus/malware removal tool. All it does is clean out your registry, temp internet files, cookies, cache etc.

Along with what danneth mentions run an online scan with this http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

I downloaded that Free-AV (Avira) one, what a load of shite! Just seemed buggy as hell.

This one seemed to fix it......

buggy in what way?

as for shite ill just leave these here..

"Of the 14 candidates tested, our all-round Internet protection program, the Avira Premium Security Suite, took first place with ease!"

"Avira takes the VB100 award once again in February 2010! Our anti-virus solution was required to face up to a whole battery of harmful malware under Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11. The result: no problems. Our software detected all viruses - with no false positives. Even in the toughest test, in which the latest malware was let loose on a version of Avira AntiVir 3.0.5 for Linux Server that had not been updated, the detection rate was an impressive 85.3%. This was the best proactive result among all nine test candidates!"

"Once again in December 2009 Avira‘s Premium Security Suite demonstrated its consistently good performance. As in the previous tests, PC Security Lab gave the product the 5-star award for excellent malware protection. The sixth PC-Security Labs award in a row is proof that users are always safe in the hands of Avira!"

"
A simple list of detection rates, from research by av-comparatives.org February 2009
Out of a total of 1.274.928 viruses, trojans, worms and malware the following list tells us the detection rates of the different AntiVirus programs: Avira 99.7% "

"avira has a 99.6% detection rate of the on-demand scanner (highest detection rate of all anti-viruses) and 71%(the highest detection rate of the proactive guard even higher than nod32 which scored 57% in the proactive test for more information visit av-comparatives.com."

". AntiVir is very light on resources and the detection rate of malware is outstanding, better than almost every other antivirus according to tests."

ill not go on but you get the idea

Avira is the best free anti virus out there, none of this AVG pish. It does have an annoying nag screen now and again but any PC/Laptop that I fix for people who dont want to shell money out on there Internet Security thats what I always install along with the free edition of Outpost Firewall and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
