Is the ps3 network down?
#42
Right, been doing some research into it and it has been caused by the fact its a leap year. So the playstation thinks that today is the 29th of feb when its the 1st of march.
Sony have said hopefully the issue will be resolved by midnight and the clock will set itself right, if not, they are going to start working on a solution there after.

Latest info on PlayStation Network Status
Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media
As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F).
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)
* Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.
For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

mine is the older shape one and it had correct date and signs in fine with no errors
what i would suggest is make sure in settings that you have it set to update time/date via internet then its my guess you won't have any probs as long as it knows its march 1st not 29th feb
change setting before attempting to sign in

DONT TRY AND MANUALLY ADJUST THE CLOCK SETTINGS!
Its the bios clock, not the setting time and date.
this will only corrupt save files and trophies you already have. Sony have stressed that loads and said to just not use your ps3 until the issue is resolved. They are hoping that it will correct itself at midnight.

Any console pre mid2009 will have the problem due to clock leap year error. Even if your ps3 is working at the moment they recommend not using it incase it suddenly gets the error message.
Sony have located the problem and are working on a fix which will be available globally by mid day 2moro. (so they say)

Play TV is ok. as far as i can tell as the only thing it uses is a usb port. so long as your not recording anything because the time/date will be incorrect on the playstation.

Its a box that plugs into the PS3 and turns it into a freeview TV recorder.
Pause and rewind live TV and records for you too.
The Mrs uses it all the time for her soaps, but I do recommend getting a big bastard HDD to go in the machine first thou cus you will use it all up in no time.

plug box into USB port in the front. Plug in ariel, put in install disk, install and off it goes.
Recommend getting the BD remote if you dont have one too.
Use it pretty much every night.

Pretty much. Even got a background record setting so you can still play games while stuff is recording. Also If you swith the playstation off while its recording something it will got into sleep mode and just keep enough power to finish recording then switch itself off when its done. Quialty bit of kit. I'd reccomend getting the bluetooth remote tho as it rinses the batteris of the controlers.

HAHA didnt think of it that way. I spose thats why alot of technophobes gotta a bit scared. I suppose it just goes to show how easy it can happen. Like this PS3 issue is global. Its gone mental.
Just makes you think if sony made planes!!

No mate i do not. well i have one in loft but no cables run to it now. got sky in living room
Problem being we have done most of the house and I dont want any cables running about as its my pet hate! I ran and hid sky+ cable in living room before we finished, so the bedrooms a no no now its done.
This year im going to look into somehow getting a cable there without major grief
