Unless your question is entirely regarding solid discs and not vented:
Groove direction is indeed irrelevant, vane direction however is not; the vanes on the inside of the disc should be swept backward.
Whilst whoever at AP told you that "there isnt a wrong groove direction" is technically correct, they should be given damn better advice to people than that.

If you look at this link (from AP's own website), you'll see what I mean by the direction of the vanes inside the disc.

The only time is doesn't apply to ventilated discs/rotors is when they have radial/straight vanes.
As I say, whoever advised you from AP is a little on the dim side for not mentioning this.
