car goes for MOT tomorrow. and i think my emissions are up the creek. it's been spluttering the last couple of days and not running right, so just taken the plugs out and there black and covered in soot. what could cause this? ive one about 1k miles in the car since last mot and last year it was fine emissions where spot, the car passed with flying colours. are there sensors etc that can cause this?pump? or just could do with another set up?

Do you start it up a lot but not drive it ? It will foul them doing that.Clean the plugs or replace them and give it a good run.Be careful cleaning them if you use iridium plus,a bit fragile.

it has'nt been on a good run for 6 months. started and stopped loads just to see if it's running right.

Its worth a try then,they will get sooty just sitting idleing,car being on coldstart obviously richer mixture.Give em a clean and that should sort it and make sure you get the car upto full operating temp before it goes for the test.Not sitting still though.
