Default Ford's that have 'crushed the dream'

Anyone ever purchased a Ford after a long dream of owning such a model only to find it didn't live up to expectations?

It may be down to a car you've always wanted to own and had lots of problems with it when you owned it or perhaps it was just nothing like you expected?

I'll start with selling a 'tired' XR2 because an Escort Si caught my eye one night off e-bay.

After the rawness of the XR2, the Escort Si was like a wet fart. (no offence to any Si owners out there!). Simply down to the Escort being far too 'comfortable' after the loud XR2. Kept it for a month and had to sell it!

Sold

Bought

The Escort Gti restored my faith - even though it had the same mechanics as the Si!

ST170! Should have been a quick car, think Ford got it quite wrong though! Was never happy with it!

MK2 XR2, was my sisters fella's who knew sod all about cars and neither did i.

Bought it for Ł200 12 years ago!!

Indicators didn't work, drive shaft was spent and engine was smoking, oh and the floor was like swiss cheese lol!! Was a bad experience brought on by a bad example as i actually really liked them.

I stuck it up for sale for Ł300 and a bloke and his daughter came round, she LOVED it, but on asking her dad if they knew much about cars he just shook his head and said nope. I told them it wasn't the car for them and suggested they look elsewhere - to honest lol!

Lesson for me was, if your going to get something, make sure it is a a good example if you want to enjoy it.

Fiesta RS1800- Mk3 XR2i's are piss poor, and this ones got an undeserved RS badge.
RS2000 4x4- Who does such a slow car need 4wd to make it slower? Oh I know, it doesnt.

The usual hatred aimed at these two cars.

The 4x4 isn't that slow and handles way better than any other non-Cosworth Escort...

Usual hatred? I've owned 2x XR2i 16Vs and a 2wd RS2000 too (as well as the vast majority of fast fords from the early 80s on), and the aformentioned cars are a waste of time IMO. Well, dont deserve an RS badge at least.

ST170 is oddly slow too considering, but it didnt get an RS badge, which to me indicates its really something special.

ive ownrd a mk1 1300 e severl mk1 xr2's and mk2 xr2's mk2 escort 16 sport and rs2000 mk2's all xr3's and rs turbos and loved them all just brilliant fun cars then i got a cossie which i thought would be the icing on the cake but couldn't be more wrong and i drove loads of others to see if mine was just shit BUT it just felt like a old seirra with a fast engine , so for me iconic motorsport car but just a shit road car full stop . i would love another mk1 xr2 with a 1760 big cam and a set of 40's again hopefully soon

Mk1/2 RS Escorts and the Mk3 RS1600i are also slow, does that mean they don't deserve the badge?

if the XR2i 16v was a waste of time, why go back for a second go?

I have had 4 x XR2s and 2 x XR2i 16vs and I have found them all to be thoroughly entertaining! With a few tweeks the XR2i 16v is a most practical and fun motor!

The only car that only did slightly put me off was an 1983 XR3i..... took my mate's for a spin and I didn't think it felt safe.... the faster we went, the more I thought the front end was gonna leave the ground, the steering got so light it put the begeebies up me!

S2 was a let down for me, myself and mates had them and not one of them has lived up to what I hoped they'd be back when I was a young 'un watching them blast up and down the sea front. Still like the look of them though

mk4 xr3i cabriolet, awful in everyway possible.

st220 didn't live upto the hype either, and actually the st24 wasn't half as nice to drive as i thought it would be.

My RWD Saff if I am honest.

Wanted a Cossie since I was 10, finally got a strong stage 3 but built a Zetec Turbo Fiesta before and the Cossie just didnt suit what I was used to. It felt very laggy as it was a big heavy car, and not ideal for the streets of London. Was lovely at motorway speed which the Fiesta wasnt, but didnt really do much motorway driving.

Going sideways was fun, but broke 4 diffs, then it got nicked and returned and decided to sell up.

Was disappointed a little, but would have another just a much more suited spec.

Sorry to say my Bug turbo Escort cossie was a let down for me, perhaps I was expecting more from it. Was Sg3 tuned and immaculate, just did nothing for me .

When I was a tech at a Ford dealer, we had an Auralis blue small turbo Escort Cossie come in for a service and something else. The workshop foreman knew I was well into my RS's (I had my Series 2 RST at the time) and asked me if I wanted to do it. Of course I jumped at it!! I'd never worked on or even been in a cossie before (I was only 19 at the time)!!

Anyways, I finished the work (really took my time with it!! Lol!) and then it was time for the road test! I really didn't know what to expect from it. Obviously, as it wasn't my own car I didn't thrash the crap out of it, I just wanted to feel how much power it had!!

Fucking hell!!! I put my foot down and the acceleration was just...................SHIT!!!!!

My RST was a lot quicker (185 bhp). I was so disappointed with it. Everyone in the workshop was telling me to be careful as 'they're fucking fast mate!'. They thought I was taking the piss when I said my RST was quicker!!!

It was a lovely car though!!

I was just going to put similar up. Driving a bog standard Escos was a proper let down for me. I wasn't actually expecting much either

Felt slow and soft to me.

Modded, different ball game, but standard defo blew the dream

But standard they are RUBBISH

the st170 was not meant to be a quick car, ford made the st170 the way it is so the rs would take the lime light. if an st170 is driven right it will please easily enough, not saying its super fast because its not but it was made to be a sporty nippy great handling car, i am on my 2nd i am, happy enough. the st170 for now.

yours must have been buggered then cause i have owned a 130 2.0 ghia focus and x2 st170s and neither were as slow as the normal 2.0, your right about the lambdas though they are a pain in the arse but that is only issue i have ever had (bar a piece of foam getting stuck in the maf lol), the mazda 3 mps is a good powerful car but as i am a ford fan i would not own one, i rather have the focus rs but i am happy with my st170 for now, and luckily this black one i have now feels alot better then my old silver one, this one deffo has at least 170 bhp, i have on alot of occasions shown up more powerful cars in the twisties inc civic type r's etc. when i upgrade again it will be for a turbo'd ford though and never a mps had one as a courtesy car ages ago, great in a straight line and well built but i found it wallowed about when cornering hard.
